Win10 - Windows Media Centre.
« on: 02 December 2015, 00:07:50 »

Been told you can reinstall (download) WMC and install on 10, as long as you have your original WinX key it came with or the Key if you downloaded WMC on a previous version?

Anyone done it, does it work, etc, need to help out a friend whos upgraded to 10 and has now screwed himself with his Home Entertainment setup, not been to have a look yet, just gathering Intel before the visit. According to Google and the like its a non starter.

I'd be VERY careful.

Most of the sites suggesting that pile of shite can run on Win10 will offer you a lovely download, packed full of Virus' and Spyware.

Windows Media Centre is a load of bollards anyway!

Yea, sorry should have added, WMC will be (if still availed for 7,8) or has been downloaded from MS.

It was running in Win7 Ultimate machine then WiFi'd up through a Loewe Media TV and the Sound System was through the Loewe as well, there were some other multi room bits hanging off it as well, but for the life of me I can't remember now, I helped him set it all about 5 years ago which is a looong time for my head.

What I do remember was, as the time, the Loewe system Media was designed for windows media, and took a few attempts to get working. Theres also a NAS but fairly sure they just use that as a external storage and back up.

he's upgraded to win10, without really thinking about it and is now having issues, I'm due around there this weekend, if I can get brain in gear.

MS's Media Center does *NOT* run on Win10.

There is some confusion, as people discovered before release that it would take the Win8 WMC key...  ...but failed to notice it had reverted to Win8!

Hence, my Media Center is still Win7

As somebody who uses it extensively - there is no other device under our living room telly except the amp - I'm interested in why you come to that opinion.

Where do you think it lacks?

I struggle to fault it - fast, responsive, ultra reliable, easy to use. Records up to 4 channels, 3Tb HDD, plays all my tunes, displays all my photos, plays all my DVDs and other video sources, manages catch-up etc.

Actually, I can fault it...   ...it never fails to record Downton Abbey and other shite she keeps series recording on it ;D

Thanks, was half expecting it being non compatible, will put it to bed then. :y

Just hope his back ups are up to date, probably end up imaging Win7 back on it.  ;)
