Ink Jet V Laser (Full Colour)

With a Resolution: 5760 x 1440 dpi I can pick a printer up for £39.99, and over the years have had numerous printers that print excellent quality pictures on photo paper.

I have just been looking at laser printers and wondering if its worth investing in one.  But my question is what resouloution gives a decent quaily with colour laser.

Then which brand for reliabilty and reasonble replacement toner cartridge(s).  Having never seen one in action or know anyone who has got one I dont know what specification to look for.

I bought a Xerox laser years ago for £99+Vat knowing the toner would cost £100 to replace (or just buy a new laser when it ran out) am still well impressed with that laser as it has allways done the job intended as is still in use with the original toner cartridge.

My reason for considering laser over ink is that I dont have much use for a priner but with 2 printers in the past that have been stood for a while the ink dried up and well . . . I buy a new printer

IME photo printing from laser printers isn't a patch on what an inkjet can do. However, as you say, inkjets are entirely unsuitable for anything other than constant use as the jets dry up and render them scrap.

I find the best compromise is to use online services to print photos when you need them, and a laser for everything else. I can't really comment on a decent spec for a photo laser printer as I've never used one that made even a passable job of reproducing a photo.

We've Han a HP desk jet for a couple of years. We sometimes don't use it for a month and it's always been fine.

I have both a HP Color LaserJet Pro M476dw and an Epson Stylus Photo PX730WD. Granted the LJ is a bit newer.

Both are horrifically expensive to print high quality colour photos.  The LJ provides better results on normal stock compared to the Epson, but the Epson provides better results on thick, glossy paper IMHO.  The Epson can also print on CDs, which is now the only reason I still keep it.

The LJ toners are about £200 a set, the Epson is about £60 for a complete set of ink.

Most aren't too bad if you use genuine ink.  Anything other than Epson has the head built into the cartridge, so even if it does block, its only a new cartridge...   ...unless Epson, where replacement heads are financially unviable.

Only reason I am wanted to upgrade the laser is my PC doesnt have a parallel post and it's beige 

Tried a parallel PCIe car adapter but had no joy getting it to work.

I also have an epson R300 and a PX730WD (Ithink) the R300 only ever had the original ink in it.

Doh! I misread the reply, ignore that, the Epson works fine

The Epson is hard to beat for photos when used with thick glossy card/paper.

When I had an Epsom, I found some really cheap ink from a number of suppliers, but it was a false economy. The colours were never right and they used to dry out very quickly. I started using genuine and was much happier. Expensive though.

Last set was £30 from Asda. Mispriced, shame they only had 1

Normally about £50 for the set.
