2.6 / 3.2 Manifolds - stainless steel?
« on: 17 December 2015, 13:19:32 »

The more I look at pics of these there does seem to be something distinctly 'stainless-looking about them? Having never had a proper close-up look at a pair, only the cast iron affairs of 2.5/3.0s, just wondering if anyone knew?

Hope this image above shows what I mean. They don't look like any old pressed mild steel to me..  :-\

Perfectly sound reasoning - my issue being I don't have any yet  :) Like I say, having never had a proper look at a pari... apologies, I should have made it clear, that pic is from an old OOF post I found via google images.  :)

By that pic (best I can find) it certainly looks like the flanges are, but as a general rule I thought welding stainless to mild steel was a bit of a no-no, and leaves the join prone to failure?

There's a local guy who reckons he has a pair on an old engine, for me. I started looking up VHT paints, but if these are stainless, then they'd clean up rather nicely, is all  :y

Mmmmmmm polish fetish. Note this is different to a Polish fetish, where the local au pairs are in danger...

Yes they do have a shield of stainless welded to them from the factory.... I suppose it was GMs attempt at preventing failure through fatigue maybe...?

A magnet test would only be of help in determining whether they are stainless or steel if they were made out of 304 grade pure stainless which a magnet won't stick to, and doesnt rust. The majority of stainless exhaust items are 409 grade which has a steel content, so will show surface rust and allow a magnet to stick to it.
