Just measured curvature of tailgate which is 45 inches top to bottom, so as the crow flies it'll be slightly less, and that means it should fit in between the wheel arch one side and diagonally transported.

Anyone carried one this way before?

Why make it so complicated?

Open the tailgate, lift the spare into the boot, close the tailgate and drive away.

You have to fold the seat down...but you have to do that to get a tailgate into an estate ;D
