.... the Swiss are holding a referendum on Sunday on whether the government should pay everyone a basic wage of 2500 Swiss Francs (£1755) per month regardless of status. 

Proponents argue that it would be cheaper than administering a complex welfare system and that with more jobs being lost to automation it will be fairer.  Opponents argue that it will take away incentive to work and worry about immigration.    Apparently no ones worried about the cost!

Was reading about this earlier this morning and the consensus is the only 25% are for it at the moment. But, we know how far out polls can be.

Studies on Universal Incomes indicate that they should be cost neutral. Simply because you aren't paying for assessment & monitoring of benefit claimants. Also, while it's true that everybody gets it, tax rates are adjusted so that its taxed back from higher earners.

Interestingly it also seems that UI has a positive effect on productivity, which is counter intuitive. You'd think that people would just sit about and do nothing, which some do. However more people are free'd up to get qualifications and persue the careers they've wanted to do rather than having to work a certain job to make ends meet, or (worse) work a certain (low) number of hours for fear of losing their benefits.

Personally I'm in favour of it, but I don't see it becoming a widespread thing anytime soon (this century probably).
