Can't help I'm afraid, but I was thinking about asking about your cassette.  Maybe not then...

I could connect a battery back up to the car but I've unplugged lots of stuff and I'm a little afraid an air bag might go off.

It won't if you remove the airbags first

Joking aside have just been asked this very question... cartridge gone in and won't eject... looking like ripping the front off dismantling to aid liberation

If HU is out, connect cables from battery to negative & positive terminals on the terminal block at rear of said HU. Switch on, eject cartridge

You forgot that Haynes book term "simply" in there that usually precedes something I have no idea how to do.

I have no idea which is the + and - in the terminal block. *hint hint*
