Fuel Purge valve - part number/ availablity
« on: 01 August 2016, 08:53:48 »

So.... The fuel purge valve, as found behind the plenum, one pipe runs to the breather bridge, the other through the wing. On advice from another OOF thread I've removed the relevant tube, blown through it, and irrespective of ignition on/off it's blocked. Anyone got a part number for this little bugger? Googled to death, can't find a number. Also, appreciate it if someone could let me knowif they're the same as 2.0 16v Omegas? (because I still have the peanut spares Omega)

and further to... following advice from another old OOF post, drove round the block with 1/4 a tank of fuel with the fuel filler cap on loose.... she seemed to drive better/pick up better/nippier. Is this the most complete psychosomatic balls, bit like when your car 'feels' more lively after you've polished it, or could there be some truth in it?  :-\

I don't know the part number mate. But what's the theory about a blocked valve causing performance issues?  :-\

Ooh, right, Mr The Bear.... pull up a chair, and get some porridge that's just right.  :y I've basically scoured OOF for every mention of purge valves. As I learned a leaky pipe would cause vac-leak related issues. In testing for this, I found the blowing intro pipe method showed the thing was blocked up, not leaky. Progress.

We're not talking about seconds added to the 0-60 times here, but a bit of occasional lumpy idle/rough running/high emissions and higher mpg (all of which I can proudly claim  :D) is the result, best found here:
http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=78907.msg1049324#msg1049324

..with an interesting theory regarding the vacuum which would occur if the purge valve is blocked -
http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=122575.msg1561699#msg1561699

the temporary test solution was to leave the petrol cap loose (thus meaning no vacuum could build up in the tank) and go for a drive. I did this and she 'felt' a bit better - but I'm 50-50. It might be all down to me wanting it to feel better. Nevertheless, the purge valve is blocked. Also, nice bit of info I recently gleaned, the plugs for purge valve, rear multiram and coolant temp sensor are all the chuffing same and within 6 inch of each other! Plug one in wrong - even temporarily - and it can bugger the temp sensor. WHichw ill cause the same issues I'm experiencing, too.

I have learned that everything on Pissy is rarely just one fault, but two or three causing the same/ish symptoms.  :y

Before you go too mad...

It is opened by the ecu under certain load conditions. Simply blowing through, I would expect it to be closed, or as you put it, blocked...

Its purpose is a simple one... to vent the fumes from the fuel tank (via the cannister in the osf wing) into the breather system for combustion prior to venting through the exhaust :y

It either works or it doesn't... might be able to actuate it with Tech2, but I would politely suggest that it ain't broke ;)

Been referring to this thread, where...

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=78907.msg1049324#msg1049324

engine off - should be able to blow through it
ignition on - shouldn't
engine running - shouldn't

There is a stink to high heaven of petrol fumes in the cabin on startup, so if the purge valve isn't to blame I'm very much always  more than happy to listen to other suggestions  :)

IS the round metal plate on the top side of the fuel tank ok?

Easy to check, just remove the inspection cover in the boot.

Ok, but to be clear, you need to be blowing from the wing towards the engine...

*Put another way, suck from the breather bridge side...

* Don't actually do this as the fumes will probably kill you ;)

Ahhh, thanks for input. Will check when the boot is empty!  :y However, I do have a spare ready and waiting  :)

Also I did blow and suck from every which way, and the purge valve is definitely blocked. Or I just have very weak lungs  :D

Remove it and check... uses 12v to open/close it :y

Ilconsidered breather cleaning might have clogged it... shouldn't otherwise be blocked as the airflow through it is clean...

Ta. Will have a crack - in theory the plenum is coming off in a couple of weeks for some plugs, service stuff, coolant temp sensor etc... so will have a bash either then, or before. Anyone have personal experience of removing one? Looks like either wipers/scuttle or plenum off job. If it's scuttle might be an easy doable job on an evening... as for plenum, I try never to rush refitting them, late at night with work in the morning etc... too much can be missed/refitted wrong/left unconnected/etc... been there before!  :)

From memory, it is on a bracket at back of 135 above the breather box... loads of room with inlet manifold off... easier than removing scuttle etc :y

Yeah, I've been researching various photos, I've found it, ta Mr Smeegle. Like I say, sucked and blown from each direction just for good measure. Knowing the service history of the car from about 2004 very well, I can safely say it's likely to be knackered!   :D

no, what I meant was, knowing the service history of the car, I could well believe that it got connected to the breather system at some point clogged up with oil, there's a clump of mud or manure in there, or something else unbeleivably stupid. I'll get 12v to it when I can get to it, anyway.  :)

I think at last count I'd discovered and repaired 14 previous bodges on this car. I mean just a thought, but it might not even be plugged in, for instance.
