Waste of a 6 series, but short of being scrapped that's about all the E36 is fit for ;D

There are people around who will do that to anything from a Citroen Saxo all the way upto an Omega ::)

It’s true people will do this to any car. But they don’t do this with new BMWs for example. Only to the old ones because they are cheap.

But yes, they will do this to any cheap cars. VWs, Opels, Fords, French and a whole bunch more. But for some reason BMW is the only one of the high end marques they will do this to. You don’t see old Mercedes for example getting the tacky treatment. The people who like the tacky look seem to be attracted to BMW for some reason.

The BMW 3 is definitely the biggest victim, because it’s also the cheapest.

But the old BMW 5 cars such as the E34 and E39 are also used for the tasteless tacky modifications:

As for the Omega, not a chance here. They are as rare as hen’s teeth here. I can go weeks or months without seeing one. People don’t even know what they are unless they are an Opel fan or diehard petrohead. If you take the badges off a PFL the general public won’t know what it is. The FL is easier and many will ask if it’s an Opel. Because the front looks like the Astra and there are a lot of Astra Gs still around.

So there is no bad image about the Omega and you won’t find a tacky one because you can barely find a normal one. There wouldn't be enough tacky ones around to give it a reputation. Also the tacky people want showy cars which people can instantly recognize, thinking they will impress others. So they choose old BMWs I guess.

The thing with old BMWs is that it’s a lose lose proposition. It has the bad reputation because all the tasteless modified cars driving around. But if it’s a stock one there is a kind of laughing through the teeth air, like, look at him with his old BMW or Mercedes. He thinks it’s a status symbol. Mainly because over here BMW, Audi and Mercedes do not enjoy this mythic status they have back in England. Here a 90’s or 2000’s BMW, Audi or Mercedes are just old cars, which are everywhere. Even in farms with farmers using them in the mud, even to pull things in the farm etc. Actually when you see an old one, most often the car will normally have a small town tag.  It’s very different than in the UK.  But the only one you see more frequently with the tacky modifications are the BMWs for some reason.

Cant remember much of it, but will dig out the service folder later and make a list.
I still have the original grill, by the way. I don't think the irmscher type grill goes particularily well with that colour, but the original grill really makes it look like an old mans car / Astra on steroids.
I am an old man, but I like to kid myself that I'm  not.  :D

It's the Vauxhall grill that gives the old mans car look. It has a very conservative look. The Opel grills are much better looking in my opinion.

Absolutely. They used to make elegant, purposeful looking drivers cars, up to around the turn of the century. Then suddenly, it was like a competition among their designers to see who could produce the most hideous looking car. Very strange.  ???

For the record I'm not saying any of the cars I posted above look any good. To the contrary. I was trying to show how tacky they are. ;)

And I agree. Can't put a shine on a turd.

So it's not only me. I fully agree. I think the last good looking BMW 5 form example was the E34 and the last good looking BMW 7 was the E38. The E39 is passable. Always thought it looked like a fat BMW 3 which needed to go on a diet. But it's alright at least. From then on it was just downhill indeed. The E60 is one of the ugliest cars to ever come out of Germany. The F10 is not much better. It only has a better looking rear but the rest is just as ugly. The E65 and the F01 are ugly as it comes too.

The huge chrome grills that started with the E60 and E65 definitely contribute a lot to the ugliness. Then is the out of proportion bodies and the rest. Even Korean cars are looking nicer these days. BMW really lost it with their flagship cars. The ones bellow the BMW 3 I don't even bother.
