Search engine optimisation - Promoting a site
« on: 20 September 2016, 19:28:03 »

I'm not going to post a link on here, but I wondered if some technical savvy folk may be able to help me with some very basic pointers on how to promote a website on search engines.

I have made a small web site, which is essentially a chat community (for something other then cars). What is the best way of getting this known to Google and such like? Do search engines still look at Metadata? Or are other methods now used?

If anyone has any pointers I'd be very grateful. I see myself as essentially a novice now, in the IT world, as so much time has passed since I worked in the field - so please treat me as such!

Cheers,
James

Indeed. I'm sure there is some clever way of doing it, and there are loads of people who will charge you money and "guarantee" higher listings for SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). My tuppence worth

Good page Titles/Headings
Good fairly short simple descriptive text on each page
Cross links with other sites for the spiders
Yes metadata still matters

I recently started a new business site and insead of creating my own code opted for using GoDaddy. Brill, certain search words first page on Google, search company name, near the very top. I'm NOT paying for Google adwords etc  :y

And content. Content is king. You can wank about as much as you like, if the content is shit, it won't work.  And as you don't control the content, its hard to make it "quality"

Nowadays, not being mobile aware gets you shunned from Google, so you need to design it to work well with mobile/small screens.

Google's own webmaster tools will keep you up to date with whats working and what isn't, start there.
