The use it/lose it farce is, I believe, an EU invention to try to force people to not work too much... part of the WTD 'dangle berries' >:(
Most companies had similar policies long before WTD came in, as carrying over lots of leave is not a good thing for resource planning

I had never encountered it before the WTD came in (year 2000 iirc). I don't know how many employers did so before WTD, but I would seriously doubt that it was most. My current employer would be happy to pay me the money for holidays I don't want to take, and I would be happy with that arrangement, but WTD says no. Ludicrous in my view.

The WTD directive cant say that or I would not be able to carry holiday over......plus I work for a fairly big organisation.

Yet in the GPT days there was no holiday carry over period, they then changed it up to 5 days with management agreement.

It allows holiday to be carried over to an extent, but doesn't allow employees to be paid in lieu of taking holiday instead of using the holiday entitlement.

They're not long away, just got the house to tidy up as SWMBO is away to work.

I was warned not to drive fast with the little gems in the car, different story all together when the kids were wee, many times they told their mother how daddy used to drive ;D ;D ;D

Location/origin of parent company might have a bearing on this as different cultures will view this differently... ie if you are unable to take leave at key project points, it would be accepted that you may wish to take longer leave between projects, or that in extreme latitudes you will get more time off in the summer months...
