Good to see you are taking easy. As long term recovery is the priority. Set very small targets and keep working daily on your personal physiotherapy and recovery.

When through adverse reaction to flu jab I lost use of my right lower arm and hand for 8 weeks, when I got control of my wrist back, so my hand did not just flop around uncontrollably, I could do 7 reps at a struggle lifting my hand using my wrist muscles. So I exercised this several times a day until over about 10 days I got up to 10 reps. I then used a small bottle to add 50g until I got up to 10 reps again with this, then bought a pair of 0.5kg wrist weights and used this until I got up to 10 reps.This was followed by 1kg weights with hand band and further followed by both of these. My long term target was to be able to lift my heavy grill pan when cooking like I could with my left hand, it took about 10 weeks to just about manage it and a further 3 weeks to finaaly get there, but I got there in the end. :y

I wish you all the best with a successful recovery from what has been an awful life changing situation. To me the key was to stay positive (fortunately, I'm a very positive person) and accept your current limits and make small incremental steps and most of all be kind to yourself and internally praise yourself on every little gain. Bit by bit you will get there. :y

Recovering from injury can be very difficult and frustrating especially when you are an active person.

The key as others have stated is to take it easy and not push too hard too fast.

I had a really bad bike smash in '78 which left me with a fractured spine and then had to cut out of a car in '81 with a fractured skull. My middle name is lucky :)

The bike one still gives me hassle although not as much as it did. The cars legacy is a scar growing more visible as my ever decreasing hairline recedes  :)

Don't give up the Mig and become a couch potato :) just pace yourself and take it one step at a time.


You have done really well so far after such a traumatic accident. :y :y

Well, I have seen the car, but the problem is, I am a sentimentalist. I sat in it with the engine running, and it sounded sweet. The interior is top class from what I could see. I'll help with the cosmetics, James. There is nothing major, and I could not see any rust. I don't know what is mechanically wrong with it, apart from the bearing you talked about.
Get help with that, tinker with the light stuff if you wish, but I reckon there is a top car waiting to arise like a pheonix

Why not use the project car to gauge your recovery?

It's shown you're not up to a heavy job like a wheelbearing, so do smaller jobs until you feel up to it.

Cosmetic jobs are particularly suited to your situation, as they take ages and are tedious but not arduous. Doing an hour or two at a time is the sensible way of finishing them when they're not critical.

And you know that we will help when(not if) you need it
