Has anybody tried putting an in line hose thermostat on a V6 if the existing thermo is failed open. Would be simple to do but would it work. Could save a lot of work.

Ive got an in line thermostat on mine untill i do the cambelt later this year. A renault 5 89 deg one. Needed a small 2mm bypass hole drilling in it but seems to work ok. Brings it up to just a tad under 90 .way better than the stuck open one thats still in. Took ages to warm up unless stationary and then cooled down again once moving. The omega hose is too small for it to be insered so i ended up making a hose with a step up bore or there was no way it would go in.

Is it really worth it to 'save' £30 in parts and a couple of hours work? That's if you go into it with a new transfer tube so you know you can finish the job in one go.

Why do an easy job when you can make it,twice as complex and cost more, It's the standard ethos of all government departments, large company's and quite a a few oof members of late.

I know what you mean. I do have a gm thermostat ready to go on when i do the cambelt and front oil seal job.point is,as original poster asked is that it does work even if temporary.

The problem with inline stats is that , unlike the engine's main 'stat, they are out on a limb and don't sit in the bypass coolant flow. This means that they will be slow to react to a rapid rise in engine temperature and, when they do open, there may be a tendency to "shock cool" the engine.

This is why you've had to drill a hole in it, which lengthens the warmup time.

OK as a temporary measure, perhaps, but replacing the thermostat isn't such a bad job and only has to be done once or, if you're really unlucky, twice in the life of the engine.

Yes thats correct. The small bypass hole keeps the thermostat bulb in hot water rather thsn sitting in a length of pipe where the water isnt flowing through.dont panic mr mannering it is only temporary ! !.
