EM light flashed on
« on: 20 March 2017, 12:19:33 »

2.6 Elite Estate, 2001

After James fitted the tester crankshaft sensor, the car has been sat idle. Put new brakes on it all round and took it on a test run round the village just now. After about 5 miles, I turned left from a junction uphill, and as I was accelerating the EM light came on, the car felt like it hit a brick wall, but within a milli second, the light went out, and we took off like a bat out of hell. I did not notice any other lights on, just the one engine one.
Would this be connected to the crankshaft sensor problem. I know cheap ones don't last, but 5 miles !!!! I have not put a pucker one on yet, as it has to go for MOT. If it fails, it will be coming off the road, and won't go back on until July August at the earliest.
No codes registered with pedal trick.
Any ideas ??

Im not sure if the pedal trick shown current codes only and not pending ones which would only be seen by a code reader. Someone will be along soon no doubt to confirm this .cheers.chris

Probably a side effect of being left idle. Decent fuel and good thrash to clear the cobwebs :y

I reported a similar problem to the good fellows on here about 4 weeks ago when I was on holiday in Dorset. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get back home without Green Flag, but was assured that it was only emissions relaed and to do the pedal trick.
That revealed a code (can't remember what it was) which claimed that it was an inefficient Cat problem. It's true; the light was on for the whole of the journey but the car ran normally.
More Oof suggestions advised that I ignore it until I could get the lambda sensor relocated (good old Serek!) and to drive home with an easy mind.
When I got back I bought some Cataclean from Halfords, took it to the nearest Shell garage for some V-Power, and gave it a good, swift run - the Italian Tune-up!
Result? The light went out, no codes with the Pedal Trick and it has been fine ever since!  ;D 8)

Read the codes, if it happens again, stop, restart (key out job), and see if EML is still on after restart.

The thing I don't understand, reading through this thread and 'Search' is that you all talk about the car (engine) running normal. But after I turned left and started to throttle, the light flashed on, and momentarily, the car lost power. As though the brakes had been applied. But no other lights on, as with switching off. Then the light went off, after about 2 seconds, and I drove home normally. When it stops raining, I shall check all connections, etc, and give it a 'thrashing' :y

See if there is a p0300 code stored by doing the pedal trick.(im sure you just get a couple of flashes when a cylinder misses a beat)  :-\

Just been out, done 15 miles, including many stops and starts so the gearbox did its work. Then 10 miles at 50mph (no open limits near here, except M40). Went perfectly. No codes still.
I reckon it was a gremlin, possibly as Al says, due to inactivity. Fingers crossed ;)

I must ask one question...if an automatic's engine stops whilst driving along the road, even if momentary, then all electric power is instantly restored, would it fire and restart, as a normal manual can, whilst still in gear. :)
