My only hope is that the pendulum will swing ........

My pendulum was swinging but I had just got out of the bath.  ::)

.........We wanted to break away to a mass of colour and free creative expression.........

I had a stripey tank top and long hair, does that count.  :-\   I haven't got either now.   :(

What was this thread about.  :-\

Rods2 and Migv6, if what you say is true, I am afraid; VERY afraid - the luntics have taken over the asylum! When will the world get back to spinning on its axis properly again?
Truly, we have changed very little, fundamentally, in our gender-specific roles despite our veneer of sophistication and caveman ethics still apply.
It's amazing how many fish need bicycles.....

I mentioned the hippies in my previous post as it "happened"  at a time when everyone under 30 wanted a change from what had gone before as I described.  The hippies went and is now correctly seen as a naive movement with naive ideals that simplified the implications of the changes we all wanted. But the aims of that movement, with love and peace and equality it's main themes, continued.

Now we are seeing the benefits of those changes, especially with us women now being able to hold senior business and political positions and the world moving on, although as always with sometimes painful events taking place. Do we really want the World to return to it's old position.  When nations would readily go to war and create a World War situation with millions being killed?

So what if male and female roles are swapped, as in the Boat Race the subject of this thread. Does it matter? In the grand scheme of things it just helps the trend towards some form of equality, liberty and freedom. Bloody revolutions have happened before now to gain that kind of advance.

We need a World with colour and light, where it is not the black and white world that it was before 1965 (my estimation as a contemporary of when things started to really changed)  We  now welcome that we as women have the right to vote, to have a bank account and own property, unlike in previous decades. Of being able to work in many environments once excluded to women, and men having the rights they do at work and play.  Anyone who wants the pendulum to swing back is wishing for something that must not happen.  If it did it would mean we are going into a period of revolution as very few will accept the working conditions and class divides of the past.  In fact it is the opposite; we must go forward and make the further improvements that humanity requires. We need strong government and upholding of tradition, but we also need good socialist principles mixed in to give our children and grandchildren the fair World we have been striving for for so long.  That is why I am a Conservative Socialist. ;)

Lizzie, if what I said offended you, it was not my intention. I love strong, intelligent women -of whom you are clearly one - and am certainly not fazed by them. I enjoy a good debate/conversation and maybe I have slightly unconventional views on feminism, but I was a new man long before he was invented because I have always believed in “equal but different”, which is where I disagree with many feminists who want total equality – nature hasn’t planned it that way and we should celebrate the differences.
Vive la difference (French accent)! :-*

Ahhh, Ron how could you offend me? :-* :-* :-*

No, I took no offense from your post, or any others. It is just everyone expressing their thoughts as we all see things.

It seems so often to me that the World has gone PC mad, and it seems we can now offend anyone in what we say no matter how we meant to say it. Crazy!!  But, as with the points I make, we HAVE come a long way since the 1950's and the post war recovery, and us baby boomers have rather led the way on that one. :D :D :y

I saw no mention of removing, or turning back the clock on womens rights. I was speaking about the type of people who seem to call themselves progressives. They seem to believe that anything which existed before they were born is worthless, useless, oppressive and must be done away with asap.
All common sense is being lost. Some things will always change and develop and that's the way it should be, but when it comes to the point where a woman who has given birth to a child, refuses to recognise what she considers a man made construct known as gender, and insists on being referred to as "they", it should be obvious to anyone who has retained some common sense, that this mindset is getting out of hand.

No, there was no direct statement along those lines, but some of us would worry that it the pendulum went back the other way, so would women's hard fought rights. It is just the way the thread has traveled through discussion, but nothing to do with what anyone has actually said.

As for your second sentence Migv6, I whole heartedly agree with you! :y :y :y

You are man, I am women and proud of it, so why should anyone want to use "they"?  It is as I said, crazy, and where PC has gone mad and does not recognise the obvious. Male and female are different, but they both produce that great thing, a baby (or 2 or 3 ;D ;D ;D)  Why should anyone, especially a women want to level it all out to one label, "they"?  Again, crazy!!  :o :o
