But, for a given safety level of car, size does matter...

https://youtu.be/58zqJCtUjSI

I have a big issue with the NCAP in that it uses the car's velocity (and therefore energy) vs stationary objects. As does the smart car vid, run across a yummy mummy in her Q7 in your smart car, and you'll wish you hadn't  ;D

Indeed. Larger cars dissipate more energy to get a certain NCAP rating, In an accident, energy input isn't just a function of your car's weight and speed.

We chatted about this recently and the conclusion was that you're safer in a modern hatch than an old tank like a Volvo 940.  ;)

Best get out and buy Mrs Rog a Smart car!  :y  ;D

You can't change the laws of physics if you crash 2 movable objects together (not what crash tests do) the heavier one will continue on its path to a much greater degree than the lighter causing a more viloent change of velocity and direction for those in the lighter. Clearly won't help you if the passenger cell in the heavier disintegrates though.

And by now won't 940's be 50% rust, 50% metal? It does rain a lot in Wales, after all..

Nope. No rust that I'm aware of and no advisories on recent MOT  :y It'll probably outlast me

Just not sure about that, I see a lot of very flat small cars around.

Due to the aweful driving round here, I would actually consider the biggest 4x4 I could get ! I never thought I would ever say that.

Here you go Rog!  :y

And last but not least, the Vauxhall Omega!!  ;D

Hmmmm, I take your point about modern design. However, I'f I'm driving along a road very similar to the one in the video and a Range Rover, big pickup, or something suddenly appears thumping along towards me. What would I rather be driving ?

So, I've concluded that I would need even bigger than a Discovery

Most LR products have an interesting outcome of an impact with a standard car... If it's corner to corner the wheel will almost certainly be ripped off (if it's a big enough hit of course) :-X

That road is well used most weekends by many bikers, mostly at max rev's,there,s usually heavy police presence on this( A class ) country lane.

About a year ago two cars with young turbonutters were playing silly buggers on a local country road. One ovetakes the other and smacks headon into a lady in an big Audi coming the other way. Two young lads killed, lady not too badly injured. Sorry I think that size does matter. Incidentally everyone was "Oh poor things" about the lads, I know a mate of theirs. However, they were idiots and deserved it. Just glad the Audi lady did ok. Due to the aweful driving round here, I would actually consider the biggest 4x4 I could get ! I never thought I would ever say that.
See, there is mileage in the mass cull. Weed 'em out before they hurt someone else :P
