Has the battery been disconnected lately?  It sounds like it has been.  The faults in the tranny/engine computers mean that they aren't talking to each other so well.  Aftermarket radio?

Disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes.  Reconnect it.  Turn on the ingnition and do NOT touch the accelerator pedal.  Leave the ignition on for 3 minutes before starting the engine.  Drive it for a while and see what happens.

battery not been touched to my knowledge, we had it
6 months or so, but we had agro with abs light
Coming on when we got it. Turned out it was an old
Code that had not been cleared properly. We sorted
It via a snap on diagnostic in the end,no other codes.
All ok until now, standard Radio. Battery not been
Touched since snap on diagnostic defo. Trouble is
guy with the snap on cant do it for a week!

So that leaves me a bit confused with what machine
Will read what codes,
so far snap on no codes in feb.
Bosch and carman2 give 2 differant code a week ago.

Digifart!

Edited. With that in mind im not sure i want to clear
The codes.would it be better to let vag see what is
There at the moment?

had the snap on diagnostic done yesterday.
No codes! Presume the last place cleared the speed
Sensor and potentiometer codes. It has not played up
since previous diag. tho, so i guess you would not
expect to see a code anyway.
But this morning when started the abs light stayed
on. She pulled over turned the engine off and
re started, no problem for the rest of the journey.
So with all the diag. done i disconnected the battery
as said above, reset the one touch windows but it did
not ask for a radio code, took it for a long spin.
No problem so far, but early days. Thanks for posts
so far.

latest, well no problems since "rebooting" the car
By disconnecting the battery. No lights, no buzzers,
Nothing. Fingers crossed. But just in case, the oil light
And buzzer mean low oil pressure as far as we can tell,
so we looked into it and its supposed to be 2 bar at
2500rpm we think. So we pressure tested
before and after an oil/filter change and breather
clean(not blocked) and its 4 bar all
day long. Now either our info is wrong, the pressure
tester is out or the car is reading twice the pressure.
But either way i cant see that the car has a low pressure
problem. So we are assuming the various ecu s have
had a hissy fit and the battery trick has sorted it.
Thanks to all for your help. Chris and Helen.

Ps, dont suppose anybody knows the correct oil
pressure taken at the oil pressure switch for
Definate?

It will be specified as "at least" 2 bar but without knowing this particular engine 4 bar is perfectly OK, I'd say. It will vary dependant on rpm and temperature of the oil (higher when oil is cold).

The pressure switches usually only need 1/2 a bar or less to extinguish the light. I'd keep an eye on it, just in case it's got a sticky pressure relief valve or something but it certainly sounds OK at the moment.

Did the oil level get low? Only other thing I can think of, so keep an eye on the level too.

We had a similar problem on an older Polo with the oil light / warning buzzer. It turnred out to be a faulty aftermarket oil filter. If this is recurring try a genuine filter, apparently the pressure relief valve in the filter was set for the wrong pressure or something and would not allow the oil to flow correctly. Car had no stalling problems, we changed the oil pressure switch, checked the oil pick up pipe was clear, used an engine flush, connected a pressure gauge etc. etc. and it was the bl---y filter.

ooh you mention the oil pick up pipe, the sump is leaking a bit round the corner nearest the power steering pump. Easy enough we thought no gaskit just sealent pop it off re seal. But the bloody drive shaft covers half the bolts. And a cable tray covers the other third. How did you do yours?
Have hurd drive shaft easy tbh.
