There will come a point where the furloughed jobs disappear because the industries they support won't be viable.

It won't/can't happen. You work at an airport, do you really think airports will close?

Let's take any business that was viable before the pandemic struck, let's say a nightclub. The owners of that nightclub might go bust, but the fabric of the building will still be there and, when/if things get back to normal, someone will step in and start it up again. If it was doing well before, there's no reason for it not to do after.
Simplistic? Maybe, but I like to think we'll all be ok.

But, if the company I work for is no longer required due to their customers either not operating or significantly downsizing...

You are right though, normally if there's a bump, then it does bounce back, but these are strange times... 

But, in my analogy, the job that you and your colleagues do will still need doing, and whoever takes over the contract would have a ready made workforce. As I said, simplistic, but at least on furlough, you have another month's breathing space.

Not wishing to pry into your private life, I would be looking towards the freedom of the road in your position. Tell them all to eff off and do your own thing. Of course, I don't know if that's possible.

Let's take any business that was viable before the pandemic struck, let's say a nightclub. Sounds fine but who is going to step in to “run” those businesses. Take an airline. Mothballed planes need to be brought back into service. Insect nests removed just to name one problem, made airworthy again. Pilots brought back up to speed, food for on board catering sourced ( presuming former companies went bust and laid off staff). Then will the hotels be open when the plane gets to its destination? There will be a lot of will to make it work but will need a lot of money. The hotels have been decaying while empty.

I think you are right because after 2 nd world war we recovered. Lots of money to be made by people with money prepared to risk investment. At least interest rates are low.  I cant see it happening quickly. Maybe another year of muddling along and in and out of lockdowns.

Please don't underestimate people, Varche. The whole concept of Brexit was about standing on our own two feet, going it alone. Things might get worse before they get better, but we will get back to normal and, I hope, be stronger for it.

From my own point of view, I am firmly grounded. Things are fine for us at the moment, but they haven't always been and I've found us with two or three quid on a Monday morning to last till payday. If I absolutely had to, I could do it again, and I am not complacent enough to think it could never happen.

Basically the customer is using overstaffing to cover what we do/did. However, the October rise in travel raised an issues that Varche hinted at... The mothballed aircraft are requiring significantly more work than was expected, so we went back in November, but at the second lockdown, they simply stopped flying. Less travel equals less demand and therefore less aircraft and less work.

The biggest issue I am finding is the uncertainty, not helped by random travel restrictions and lockdowns. No doubt the customer will survive, the question is one of scale and the impact of business reform both since March and looking ahead...

I have embarked on a process that should see me well placed once things stabilise in the long run... As long as the uncertainty stops.

Less travel equals less demand and therefore less aircraft and less work.

The biggest issue I am finding is the uncertainty, not helped by random travel restrictions and lockdowns. No doubt the customer will survive, the question is one of scale and the impact of business reform both since March and looking ahead...

I have embarked on a process that should see me well placed once things stabilise in the long run... As long as the uncertainty stops.

From my own point of view, I am firmly grounded. Things are fine for us at the moment, but they haven't always been and I've found us with two or three quid on a Monday morning to last till payday. If I absolutely had to, I could do it again, and I am not complacent enough to think it could never happen.

Fortunately, I managed to get all my previous nonsense cleared at the end of February, and being furloughed certainly takes alot of the immediate pressure off... Being made redundant would have been disappointing, but conversely would have forced a change of direction, which would have seen me working rather than paused.

But this current role was a rare opportunity and I am loathed to just walk away, hence trying to focus down the line...

Just need work to approve next years holiday requests in order to get the exams booked...

You've quite a bit of time on your hands right now, Al, try not to think negatively about it or you'll make decisions based on that negativity. Waiting is a very hard game, but you're young, you have time on your side.

Nothing to do with Brexit. At all.

All European countries are going through the mill. I just used planes, holidays as an example.

A lot of things will change. We have already seen people buying more on line for example, people working from home. I still don't see getting back to normality any time soon and certainly not next year. Normal might be taking holidays more  in home country. More driving than flying. ( a European survey recently showed that).
