DG - If you are getting FTTC, then the router should work where it is now (assuming they are not renewing the cable into the premises), although VDSL2 can be more touchy around shitty wiring designs.

If you are getting FTTP, then they will be running a fibre into the premises, and the ONT (which needs power) will likely have to be at the front, ground floor.  The router can sit anywhere, but you need to run a CAT6 from ONT to router (and CAT6 cannot be run outside, unless you get the special type for outdoors, and earth the shielding.

Out of curiosity, is this due to the risk of lightning strike, or some other more mundane reason (e.g. UV breakdown of the covering)?

[LC0112G]

My thought process is to wait till they turn me off, then moan like bu99ery. I haven't received a DV Modem/Router yet and am still on an analogue contract with BT.

I do still have an old analogue phone pugged into the socket where the line enters the house, so I can still make calls to complain when the power fails. And it failed 3 times last month, on the Saturday about an hour before the England-France footie game.

Your contract is actually for a phone services (under the USO).  This can be provided however the provider sees fit (though only BT are under USO (ignoring Kingston/Hull)

So they can (and will in the next 15 months) move you to DV....    ...because the analogue phone line doesn't work to well when the line cards are ripped out of the exchange, and the building knocked down to become flats.

Exactly. Ignore them till they eventually send me a DV Modem/Router. Till then don't f with something that has worked since Alexander Graham Bell had an idea.

This is mine:

From the pole to here and from here straight to the router.

I notice he left the old drop wire in as well

WRONG! I missed this fella out.

Not heard of anything regarding the supply onto the property so shall leave it where it is until such time as it has to be moved

[TheBoy]

So STEMO, thats FTTP as you know.  The box outside is nothing more than an access point into the fibre connection, ie, the fibre comes in (overhead in your case) to that box, where it joins a short piece of fibre going inside the house into the ONT (the inside box), and the ONT has a CAT6 cable to the router

Yes, lightning surges, rather than direct strikes. Nothing can cure direct strikes

Outdoor network cable is shielded, and the cat5/6 plugs have an extra tag for earthing.

The UV thing is also relevant though

[TheBoy]

And no need to ask how I know what a total shite those Cat 5 shielded plugs are to crimp

Bro's shops used to be (might still be if anyone turned the AP power back on ) via a WiFi link with very directional yagi antennas mounted on top of the roof.  They obviously had to use external cat5, and were in 24/7 use for around 20yrs until one of the shops was leased out.

Only a measly 54Mb, but that was pretty quick back in 2002

It's character building stuff you know, especially when the whole crimp wedges itself in the crimp tool.

Two older bases dead, but router and primary phones seem happy enough in their original locations
