Old Guys and Mortality
« on: 22 October 2008, 20:31:55 »

Have had a sense of my own mortality recently. :(

Just over a year from now I will hit the big 50...........Got me to thinking, are my best days behind me now?..............Is it downhill all the way from here? :-/

Funny thing is, I still feel much the same as when I was 18. I still look at the young women, but if they glance back at me, it is usually because I look like their Dad, or worst still their Grandad :o :o :o

But then I had a sort of road to Damascus experience, and it was all thanks to Bruce Willis. 8-)

Settled down to watch Die Hard 4.0 on DVD, to see old baldy in action, and then it struck me that this guy is a few years older than me, and still playing the all action hero.........and then Mrs Optimist says, and he's years younger than Sly Stallone (62) and Harrison Ford (65).

This cheered me up no end. Perhaps at 48 I am slightly too young to be an all action hero. All I want now, is to buy a Suzuki Hayabusa, and go on a trek through the jungles of Borneo.

Yes, yes.......I know some of you will say its a mid life crisis, but come on guys, whats the alternative.............A cardigan with wooden buttons, pipe and slippers and an allotment?

I'll take my chances and grow old disgracefully. :y :y :y

Would be interest to know how other OOFers of similar age feel? :y

You've got a few good years left.  Enjoy them.   :) :)

It's all to do with mental and physical health.  Get fit, stay fit and avoid depression.  Then you can stagger on as long as you want.  My 94 year old uncle only gave up playing golf earlier this year.  On the other hand, I feel like I'm on my last legs at the tender age of 62.

57 going on 17 here ....  I have no wish to grow up .. I like me just the way I am .... was on a business trip to USA couiple of years ago, ended up with an unexpected stop-over and the whole crew went to Universal Studios Islands of Adventure ... I went from 55 to 15 in 5 paces ... rest of the crew coudn't keep up !! The other "old guy" and I just went for it .. left the youngsters standing !! 4 Times on Duelling Dragons .. 3 on Incredible Hulk ... etc etc etc  :)

You are only young once .. so enjoy it for 60 years and more !!!   :)

I am 1 year and 6 days away from 50 :( :o :'(.....I often feel that the good times are far behind me,but one of the few things that really ,still makes me feel alive is riding bikes.so I would say that if you want a Hayabusa, get one ,but ffs treat it with respect because they are an absolute beast.
People (particularily mrs Bitz) have been telling me for years that I am too old for that sort of thing but I ignore them. you only live once. :y

46 here and been asking myself some BIG questions over the last year or so.

Also noticed the girls looking back at you thing... that takes some getting used to... Can you tell the ones that like an older bloke yet? If not - keep up the practice and you will get it. Not many - but they are out there   :y

Amongst the pain of being a young bloke in a middle aged body there are two major things I have to say:
1. Get the rather Hayabusa before you're back gives out/your gout sets in/you just can't take the cold anymore or - all of a sudden you really will be too old...
2. Count your blessings. There's a lot of people out there around my age that are starting to have trouble getting around. Walking sticks, bent backs, big time overweight etc. I can still pop out for a 3 mile walk with the camera and not notice. While that should really be 8 miles, I am still grateful for it.

I'm 44 and i am sure that my body might be aging but i still feel 18 in my mind, still love video games, stupid jokes(see other posts) laughing when someone falls over and now i've got glasses for the first time i can get a better look if a young lady catches the eye. It's all relative to how young your mind is stay fit,as said, and stay young in the mind.I will never grow up,don't want to and don't need to.as we say in the ghetto sweet, safe, check it and keep your s**t tight,or summat like that anyhow. :y

Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional...

Soon to be 55 here, discovered Mountain Biking about 10 years ago, now  career down all sorts of stuff from Wales, Scotland and to the Alps, probably the fittest I've ever been in my life (and the most injured when i fall off :-) ) I never used to be very energetic in my younger days. Just started to do a bit of running as well.

I am 51 with the mind of a 20 year old ( body can't keep up tho!). I have a gorgeous wife a little over half my age and a great 2 year old son. When I was single my oldest g/f was in her mid twenties, I still went clubbing 2 or 3 nights a week. Marriage slowed me down, not age  ::)

Enjoy life ...
