Eng oil what grade?
« on: 23 October 2008, 23:27:57 »

Hi there,
Bought a mig 2.5 v6 yr 2000 103k mls from Ebay. Oil was black and smelt of petrol (obviously hadn't been changed for a while). Got oil and filter changed. Noted they put 5w 30 in although handbook states 10w 40.
should I dump the oil and put 10w 40 in or should I leave till next change. (somebody says with an older and high mileage motor 20w 50 would be better) Bit extreme I thought.
On another subject, Guy I bought it off (part time trader) reckons cambelt was changed by previous owner at 98k (motor done 105k now) but has no reciept to prove. He did however give me the previous owners name and telephone no and said I could phone the lady to confirm. Dont want to pester the lady, so thought if I take off the cover, the belt should be clean and fresh and tensioners should be new looking after 5k miles. If not I could change the belt.
Comments please.

VX oil 10w40 is best .. and very cheap if you get a trade card from autobahnstormers for £20 .. VX doing a "4 for 3" offer so you save shedloads .. :)

20 litres for £28 + VAT  :)

Cambelt idea is sound but personally I'd contact the lady .. :)

5w30 oil won't be a problem though.  :y

It might be worth doing another change in say 1000 miles if it seems that it has been neglected in the past, as the oil will quickly pick up contaminants. Consider cleaning out the breathers (see howto) too, as these can cause other problems if the dirty oil has caused them to block.

You can't really leave the cam belt to chance on these engines. Every 40k / 4 years without fail. However, it will be obvious if you have a new one on there. Look for the cast aluminium backplate that holds the tensioner and top idler pulley. This should still look brand new, as it will have been changed with the belt. If this looks manky, even if the belt is new, change belt and tensioners, as it is the tensioners that generally fail.

/\ Wot they said.
If you do change the cambelt make sure you or your mechanic use a cam locking kit you can't change one without it.
