I wouldn't risk it, your compromising both the water and oil system's - besides the cost isn't too bad to be fair ( I can't speak... bought a new car when mine went  :D )

£70 to £100 for the cooler,

I was quoted from a "friendly" vauxhall specialst £50 and a pack of stella to fit

signs are mayo in the header tank, Oil in sump fine, some over heating

pain in the arse to clean out though...

The internal oil cooler is a neat solution because it can't overcool the oil. It won't ever get colder than the coolant but the cooler can dump heat from the oil into the coolant when the engine is working hard. With an external cooler, you would need an oil thermostat and bypass arrangement to prevent overcooling, you will have longer oil lines increasing the risk of damage and pressure drop.

If the coolant is kept in good condition the oil cooler shouldn't fail, but because it sits at the junction of parts made from cast iron, aluminium alloy and stainless steel, it's just asking for corrosion when the antifreeze gets old.
