if i playfight with my kids , my 11 month old pup who is as daft as a brush will get inbetween us and bark like mad and even get hold of the material on my sleeve and pull me away,(not nastily)

to me i see this as good as he is protecting his family and personally think kris that you have nothing to worry about

Regardless of whether the dog was protecting the littl'un the main point is it had a go at you. You should be too high up the food chain for the dog to even try it therefore the dog sees you as below it in the "pack" or it would'nt have tried to discipline you.
Not necessarilly a bad dog but needs to know it's place. (no i don't mean beat it) greet family members before the dog, eat before you feed the dog. It'll learn.

Very rare a dog will defend a human unless trained to do so.It would probably be that it wanted to join in the play. How old is the dog,has it had any obedience training,is it normally a nervous dog when it meets strangers?I have been involved in training German Shepherds in the equivilant to police dogs so have got to know the ways of dogs,so can be quite sure that any dog that bites with anger will break the skin.
