Congo
« on: 01 November 2008, 22:01:45 »

Just seen on the news the humanitarian crisis in the DR Congo, kind of puts things into perspective.
What must it be like to not be able to feed your children.
I cannot even begin to imagine how these people must be hurting. :'(

Poor Congo, poor Africa, a beautiful continent, but like  Jerusalem always troubled by strife due to man's inability to live, free of greed, in peace, understanding and respect.

Until  Jerusalem's and Africa's many complicated problems are finally resolved and we stop witnessing the vulnerable suffering, then this World can never claim to be civilised. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :( :( :(

And the U.N. will probably spend the next 2 years having meetings and arguing about the best way to help. :(

Unfortunately this has been going on in Africa for thousands of years .... it is called tribal warfare ... we might think ourselves civilised but what we cannot do - but often try - is to "dictate" to others how they should behave.... we usually only make things worse.

UN going in and distributing aid only does 2 things .. 1) it encourages one side to attack the other to get the aid just delivered, 2) the side that have had the aid delivered now use their resources to buy weapons not food .. so things get worse.

The whole thing is purely about power and resources .. both of which lead to corruption  .... it is IMHO almost unstoppable.  :(

I agree with you that it is about as solvable as the Israel/Palestine conflict.Wether we can do something or not it still is very hard to see innocent kids suffering and whatever the cause we must feel or we become indifferent and that means nothing will be done IMHO

On the subject of Africa in general, I read a news story today.

Now I think I'm pretty seasoned in reading about barbaric behaviour, but this makes me feel sick to the pit of my stomach.  >:( :'( :'(  :'(

Despite our many problems in this neck of the woods, I have to say we are are right to consider ourselves civilised.

Historically there has been one period in the history of Africa when there was very little internicine cruelty, when the "poor" slowly had their living standards raised, and many illnesses and diseases were eradicated ......

it was called colonialism, both British and French .... the tribal leaders were simply not allowed power ... it will never happen again due to cowardice by the Western leaders amid the fear of "political correctness" ... if you don't believe me .. don't look at the Congo/Ruwanda situation ... cast your eyes over the last 20 years of Zimbabwe ....

when it was Rhodesia it had a nickname ....  "The Larder of Africa" ... now it is actaually the poorest country in Africa.. :(
