General engine Q for Mark DTM or other omni-expert
« on: 24 December 2006, 23:45:54 »

94 Jeep 5.2L MFI threw a new one today.  First engine problem ever.  Was running fine.  Left for 20 mins in 28 deg C after short trip.  Started, but down a couple cylinders.  Turned off a/c but no change.  Would barely rev.  Steadily got worse until died after 1-2 mins.  Would not start after, the odd fire while cranking but that was it.  Check engine light on when key on, then went out before cranking.  Thought maybe fuel pump.  Rooted around trying to find fuses etc.  Fuel pump relay clicked when ignition turned on.  Eventually found bleed valve on fuel rail.  Had fuel pressure.  Tried to start.  Started and ran fine since?!?

Only things we did was have bonnet open for a while, and jiggled fuses and relays.  Check engine light normal.  Battery has been disconnected recently, but no idea why that would do this.  Jeep has other major issues so looking to trade in.  Any suggestions, especially quick checks?  Cheers.

If it was 28 deg C then i would guess fuel evaporation, if it was 28 deg F then possibly fuel freezing.

Used to happen in my Rascal, they had a little flap that was manually swithched over in the winter to stop the fuel freezing while driving along and causing it to grind to a halt :o

Otherwise i havent got a clue  ;D

the fact it died slowly....suggests to me it gradually strangled and supped all the fuel til none was left ( stick a £5 or so in it and give it a while.....or till it gets warmer ( simple but cheap fix)

It still sounds like fuel starvation or similar..is it now running on all cylinders?

It may well be the fuel pump relay and wiggling it sorted it temporarily...

Thanks guys!  Thinking it may be fuel filter in general, had a temporary blockage.  Beforehand engine was strong at part throttle, but weedy at full throttle and high revs.  We're looking at trading it in this week, so may not mess with it unless it repeats problem.  It is running fine ever since, been driven several times.

Someone I know mentioned they are on the lookout for one of those, how much do you want for it?
