I have also been burned by two sellers not liking the fact that I gave honest (non inflammatory feedback) factually describing for example that a pc didn't work cause the RAM was defective and they were most unhelpful.

BUT I think rules should be flexible, not applied wholesale.  There are times when ebay SHOULD permit u to make negative comments about bad buyers.., because sellers deserve protection as well as buyers.
Its not perfect, but its a huge improvement on the open system before.

You are more likely to get conmen sellers than buyers, as with all transactions, so the seller needs more protection.  Exceptions are those categories that I have mentioned time and time again - laptops, phones, high value tech items.  Stay away from buying or selling them on Ebay.

If the rules don't work for you, there are always car bootys and sunday markets ;)

As to OP, why didn't you use a proper car selling medium - egay, like other auctions, is great for picking up cheap cars, but not so good for selling.

Because i didnt have time, due to the original buyer not being in touch , and as the tax was running out and i had nowhere to keep it i had to sell it fast! :P

I think the main problem with the ebay feedback system as it stands, is that a buyer can use the threat of -ve feedback to force the seller to do something which he has no actual obligation to do . i.e. provide a refund or partial refund when there is no legal reason to , or sell the item for less than the winning price when the item is collected.

Although at the moment I don't think this happens very often , it may be on the increase as more buyers become aware of the possibilities.

In this respect it is different to normal mail order, where the buyer can only exert unfair pressure by the usual means of trading standards etc. , which they are unlikely to do because trading standards would advise them that it was an unfair claim.

Although the current ebay system helps to keep the sellers more honest , it's unlikely to work long term , where one party to a contract has a lever they can use, to which the other party can't respond.

Power corrupts and all that.

Sadly, that is incorrect. If you are a conman, there are many, many ways to get an expensive item, and not have to pay for it, and the seller has to lump it.

Sorry ,I probably didn't make it very clear what I was trying to say.

What I was getting at was that there aren't any other types of selling , where you get feedback from your buyers which is able to be viewed by other potential buyers.

If you buy something by ordinary mail order for example, the buyer can only make -ve comments by sending letters , emails and the like or complaining to trading standards , newspapers and suchlike.None of these methods are likely to reach all your potential buyers , whereas -ve feedback on Ebay does.
This effectively gives the buyer a powerful lever.

I don't feel it would give a lever - I would simply file any attempt to not pay or pay less as NPB.

Yeah, you're probably right.   Be interesting to see what effect their present feedback policy has, if any , or whether they feel they've got to start tampering with it again.

I hope they do tweak it further as more loopholes are discovered.

But the current system is a million times better than the older system where it was weighted too heavily to sellers

I agree the old system where sellers could give retaliatory -ve feedback was crap.

Maybe someone will come up with the perfect solution to buying and selling , but like you say there are too many conmen around , so somehow I doubt it.

Mind you life would be boring if everyone was totally honest and upright and decent and reasonable , wouldn't have anything to moan about !!

The thing that is currently annoying me with the new ebay setup/layout is that I cant work out how to delete favourite searches when they are no longer favourites. :-/

well my car was picked up today - guy left mega feedbak - which the car and me deserved as it was accurately described and according to him lovely to drive, so the self-abuser that bought it originally will have no benifit from their negative outburst  :y :y

Pleased your ordeal is over and result ended up with +ive feedback. We had similar problems with buyers, comming up with reasons to not complete the deal they made during the bid process. In my opinion what is wrong with both parties, if a dispute exists, having a quarrantine area visible to all, of such debates and let other users make their own opinions. Does not need to be manned though every one can see the path of events leading to the cause of the problem. A bit like what's gone on here and appears to have happened to many!

Cool , even better result......
I raised a dispute, and because they didnt bother responding, i got my listing fee back, my final value fee back AND their feedback was removed!!! so am back on 100% again  :D :D but the positive i left them full of negative comments ahs stayed  :) :)
Also on my detailed seller rating, my item as described has gone back up to 100 % so how someone in Ireland that never even saw the car can mark that down i do not know, but all's well that ends well.
£27.99 though  fees for listing and selling a £150 car is steep so i have learnt my lesson i am gonna use other mediums in future, pistonheads the trader even my local wooo,
Because as someone said on here ebay is great for buying but SH**e for selling!
