It's not much help to you, but I found the best way to learn a foreign language is to live there and pick it up as you go. I spent a couple of years working on German passenger ships based in Hamberg many years ago and ended up fairly fluent in German.

J'ai trouvé le français très difficile à apprendre, combien de temps at-il fallu pour vous apprendre la langue, ne vous parlent couramment ou juste des bribes  ;)

J'ai vecu cinq ans a Paris, les grenouilles me traitent de menteur quand je leur dis que chuis (slang for je suis) un rosbif  ;D ;D

What I do like about the french language is that you pronounce it exactly as it is spelt.  So if you can pronounce a word you can spell it and visa versa :y
