Wishbone bushes
« on: 30 December 2006, 16:20:23 »

Project B has a few interesting handling characteristcis and was showing signs of wear on the inside edges of the tyres.

So, off with its wishbones!

The front horizontal bush:

The rear vertical bush:

Both are totaly cream crackered so I will check the camber etc as the next job and free off the front track rods ready for tracking setting.

Would that show up on an MOT?

Just mine failed a few weeks ago for worn tyres on the inside fronts.....

MOT tester blamed the speed bumps for wearing the tyres.

The nearside back is doing the same, while the offside back is fine.

Worn bushes would show up but only as an advise if its a good tester a bad one would fail them.
Strictly speaking if a bolt runs through the bush (which most of them do)  if the bush is completetly hanging and in this instance the arm can't come off then its an advise BUT. the tester would use section C of his advise sheet and deem the car unsafe to drive on the road, and if its that bad then other things would fail as youv'e said like tyres and possible brake balance etc... Besides the car would be all but undriveable.
Hope this helps :y

Sorry just to clarify i'm not saying that tyre wear is not caused by bushes being worn but that worn bushes would not necessarily be picked up on the Mot.

If tracking is okay then i would look at other things like bushes and camber settings etc......

Hope this clarifies

(by the way, Head hung in shame,  I do mot's for a living so any Mot advise just ask. A nods as good as a wink) :-X :y

Did you rebush the old ones? I did that on my old omega but it ended up costing as much as new wishbones as i had to go to a machine shop and ask them t make metal cups so that i coud remove the bushes which cost 40euro and then i realised that my dads press was not strong enough and i paid another 20 for the same guys to remove and refit the new bushes. The irony is that the local opel garage had quoted me 50 euro to do the job.

Yes I did re-bush them....with Boge bushes which I already had.

I have a proper set of guides (vaux items) for use with a press (matchless has a homemade press) so no overheads. I am sure if they were needed, the guides etc could be made available as a loan to somebody but, there dam heavy so wouldn't want to post them!

was there any movement on the wishbone to indicate that the bushes were worn?

Mine look to be original, have done 120K and i have excessive tyre wear on the inside

I have seen wishbones on Ebay for about £25 brand new, i didn't know if it was worth taking the plunge and changing them

Inside edge tyre wear is possibly knackered camber, seemingly a common Omega problem. Consider a Full Geometry check (not 4 wheel alignment etc, waste of money imho).

Yes there was movement but, if you looked closely you cold see the vertical bush had split.....if the bushes ae as bad as these then the camber will be affeceted as the wishbone moves out (and in again!) and hence the tyre wear...

I'm sure these were the original 137K mile bushes.........there is little point in getting the camber set if the bushes are shot...
