B*gger!!
« on: 03 January 2007, 16:22:16 »

Over the last week or 2 the Saab has been a bit off when you first start it in the morning... I put it down to dampness and made a note go round and check the electrics.

Today I drive it and notice idle is a bit uneven... then I notice the copious amounts of smoke coming out of the exhaust!!  >:(

Not had a chance to look yet but I suspect piston rings are gone, leaking oil straight into the cylinders, hence dodgy starting and smoking!
Taking the ignition pack off and checking the plugs will soon confirm my theory.

If it is... then I suspect my affair with the old beastie will come to a swift conclusion as I will break her for parts (more cost effective than a top end rebuild!) and go Omega shopping....again!

I see a floor in your conclusion....

When stopped.....oil runs down the bore wall, not up......it might run down the stem seals in which case it would do it after start up and go fairly quickly and also smoke once you hit the accelerator following period of over run (throttle shut engine braking).

If its piston rings it smokes all the time........its just the amount that changes!

Still, it didn't go round corners anyway....... ;)

I am pretty certain it is the rings... and thank you for the correction Mark. ;)

Shame, I was going to sort the going round corners problem.
Didn't half go well in a straight line though!  ;D

Anyone want some parts for a Carlsson? ;)

I certainly hope it's not anything serious such as valves or Piston rings.. but if it's puffing loads of oil then it doesn't sound very good

What a shame, would you be able to do much of the rebuild yourself?

The rebuild would be a big job and I would have to change the timing chain while I was at it.
Not something I would fancy at all and cost would be prohibitive relative to the cars value.

Breaking it I can get my money back and maybe a bit more on top.

At least with an Omga I have spares, I reasonably know what I am doing and won't have as much p*ss taking from Mark!  ;)

Unless I can find a manual 24v Carlton GSi in good condition.....

Sure its not the turbo seals.....pop the inlet off before starting and see if there is any oil in there....but, dont start it....you will over speed the turbo.

Rings dont just suddenly go.... (one might break).

Do a compression test..

I am wondering about the turbo seals...

I will have a poke around in the morning before I go to work.

Might need to borrow your compression tester please.... :)

If its suddenly started burning oil then it wont be valve stem seals. Could be broken rings but unlikely. Best guess is the turbo oil seals as Mark says. Has turbo been making any noises recently?  what state is the oil in? how much is it using?

I thought you also had an Omega to play with....use that until you get the Carlsson sorted out?
