Fixed the central heating......
« on: 21 December 2008, 09:42:22 »

But my gas bill will go up now!  ::)
Since ive had the CH on this year, none of the rads upstairs have worked....all cold and no airlocks in them.
Ive been using a portable gas heater in my bedroom when its been really cold  ::)
I had a rad moved a couple of years ago and have been suspecting that the useless plumber didnt put any protector back in the system when he refilled it. Its all microbore piping....and i thought that it had sludged/furred up on the pipe/s running upstairs.

I added a de-sludger/de-scaler via a rad downstairs (aerosol can) 24hrs ago. So much easier than draining the system and climbing around in the loft.
This morning all the rads upstairs working now  :y
Just need to flush the system this afternoon.....and add a can of protector via a rad.  :D

Ok the aerosol kits are a bit more expensive.....but saves climbing about in the loft......esp if it isnt boarded....and seem to do the job  :y

Related Q, are you supposed to regularly add inhibitor, or drain down and replace? Been in my house 8yrs now, should I do it?

I once read that (leaving aside acid-flux and wire wool residue form the installation) it`s mostly the acidity of the CH circuit water that causes all the rust and (associated) sludging....with scale (caused by temporary-hardness) being only an issue 'once' upon first filling; providing `the system remains in steady state with regard to leaks/top-ups......so, perhaps if you just have access to sufficient demineralised (or distilled) 'neutral' Ph water to refill you might save much on those costly CH inhibitor chemicals.

I think its suppose to be yearly  :-/ Tho im sure a plumber/heating expert will advise.
If you use one of these aerosol kits no need to drain the system down.
The kit i used was Wickes own brand, called rapid dose.
They do them for open-vented systems (like mine) and sealed systems.  Bout 20squid for an inhibitor kit  :y If you are going to descale/unsludge as well, you dont need a kit, just the aerosol can, as you can use the kit from the inhibitor kit......bout 11 squid for the aerosol on its own  :y
