I have been going to an evening class at the local college (Basingstoke). Just an introductory course, but it has been great so far. Guy who runs it is an ex-REME welder and just lets us play with whatever we fancy. No boring classroom stuff, just straight into getting your hands dirty with a but of tuition where it's needed.

Had a go at oxy/acetylene gas welding to start with, which I found a great way to start. Everything happens at a controllable rate and it's not unlike soldering, I found. MIG welding came a lot easier after that.

I got a 20 quid auto-darkening helmet from eBay and it's been a godsend. Having an extra hand available makes it so much easier.

when batery dies on auto-dim mask you can still get a bad flash from an arc and it is the worst headache you can imagine for the following 2 days.

If you can master oxy/acetylene then you'll be able to TIG too, same technique. :y

I was told that you know when you're good enough as you can write your name in weld...

Found Oxy-Acet very easy (but hade done soldering before...); took a while to get used to MIG though!

Mine "fails safe" (goes totally black without power). Good idea to make sure the batteries are good before use, though, as I guess it's possible they'll go nuts with poor batteries.

I think he said they have a TIG welder. Might see if I can have a go.

if you're going to buy a MIG welder get one that doesn't have a live torch as they're a real pain to weld with....normally the cheapest ones you can buy. buy a solar powered auto darkening mask, no need to worry about batteries then ;)
