i'm changing the os on my security pc again
i'm running windows 2000 and havimg trouble with a program that don't like win 2000
the program will run on xp but i don't have a xp disc but i do have a xp linux disc
is there much difference between the two

all as i need is just the basic os and not all the extra junk that comes with it like the games and spread sheet and junk like that

You have Windows XP as released by Microsoft.  Commercial, you have to pay for a copy.

You have Linux, as released by a heap of linux distributors.  Whilst 'Free' that doesn't necessarily mean you can legally use it without paying for it - Open Source view on 'free' isn't the same as everyone else's .  Some are free though.

If your software runs on Windows XP, then use Windows XP.  If it doesn't run too well on Windows 2000, it has little chance of running (even under emulation) under the Linux kernel.

Ahem! Linux is generally free-it is supported by its community.  If you use a certain flavour, i.e. Ubuntu.PCLinuxOS.etc.  then you can make a donation to the 'makers' of that version.not compulsory.  
Some of their revenue is derived from advertising and from commercial  ties.
I suppose its a bit like us guys helping each other from throwing money at the rip off merchants in those garage thingys.

As a by note, A young chap I work with asked me to fix his 5 year old XP box,bought via a catalogue. Intel Celeron@2.5 Ghz,256mb of RAM,80Gig Hard Drive and no Graphics card! All in a Box the size of a wardrobe!

Xp was knackered and he only had a recovery disk that kept spitting out its dummy. So I installed the latest version of Linux Mint (Ubuntu based)-installed a few applications like VLC (video) and some stuff to let him use his Ipod--He's over the moon!

i put xp home on m system and installed a security program called i-catcher that welung666 has been using for some time now
ive got 2 identical cards in the pci slots for the camera's and i-catcher kept spitting 1 card out and wont except both cards at the same time
both me and welung 666 have tried everything we could think of and still couldn't get it to except both cards at the same time

i'm having to stick win2000 back on to carry on running pico2000

Linux is like Marmite....

I want to like it, but most of the stuff I use is Windoze only (mainly work apps) so can't - and familiarity breeds contempt in my case.

I keep having a go at it....

All Linux is 'free', but only a few distros are no-cost.  Redhat, for example, is rather expensive, and makes Windows look dirt cheap over the the 5yr realistic life of a PC.  

Linux has a place.  Most definately not on your average desktop, but it has a place.  It can be a good building block for small appliances.  Get X on there, and its a dog.  Additionally, its (lack of) resource management means its never going to be great in the busy server environment.
