WD My Passport Essential
« on: 07 March 2009, 07:39:17 »

Just bought a WD Portable Hard Drive.

No problems on the PC, but if I plug it into the Laptop, it says USB device not recognised.

If I do a restart, or plug it in before I boot up, it recognises it without any problems.

Any ideas please?

sounds like the laptop isn't getting the driver until start up.
I had it before with a webcam, as soon as I restarted it worked.
Uninstall the USB drivers and reinstall them.
I should sort it :y

Have you checked the WD site for drivers for your platform/ model etc?

If not just google it for fixes

I'm guessing this is a usb powered drive with no seperate psu?

knowing your laptop, you'll have to lump it i'm afraid. Not uncommon with older usb1 ports

Solved it, backed up the Laptop, re-installed XP, restored the Laptop.

Everything now works fine.

Thanks for you interest.
