and my PC is running so much faster. Never known such a memory-hungry program. I was sitting looking at the processes in the task manager and the VM size was continually going up....and up.

Try closing AVG Free!

It’s not wise to shut antivirus software. Ad-Avare is only good for a monthly check. Otherwise, same as any other antispyware will take too much resources, especially when checking internet searches.
ver 7 or 8? 7 takes ca 30-40Mb, ver 8 goes up to 50mb.  AVG 8 has got memory consuming www link checker which was slowing my computer. It’s easy to switch off and not worth to keep if you use internet as you should (no dodgy websites )
