Omega French Adventure
« on: 07 February 2007, 11:40:15 »

Not been around for a while, but been dropping in now and again to catch up with what looks like a great forum :)

Anyway looking for some tips on 2 points for the summer. Due to the lack of cheapo flights from Southwest to Europe, in August the Meggy (2.6 03 reg, 30k) is going from Devon to Folkstone, Calais to Carcassone (SW France 650miles form Calais) and hopefully home again ! Apart from the stuff you are required to carry while driving in France, has anyone got any tips on bits/pieces/spares that might be worth having on board when going on trip that long? I'll probably get basic service done before going and make sure no probs with tyres and exhausts ok. But any tips from experience welcome.

Also any tips/experience on routes welcome as our knowledge to date extends only to try and avoid mways around Paris if poss.

Get cambelt and tensioners done before you go. :)

Take a spare crank sensor! ;)

Most of the main roads in France are toll roads. Not cheap, but they were much quieter and better built than ours. Also a reassuring lack of "les gendarmes".

Tip. Try racing everyone else away from the toll booths. Good fun!  ;D

Thanks, wise words. Been thinking about getting cam belt done, but as I'll be getting garage to do it (way beyond me) I think I'll get it done way before we go, to make sure done properly.

Funny thing about cruise is on previous Omega I had it and initially thought I couldn't be without it at first. However after a while I did start to worry that the comfy interior plus cruise could lead to risk of keeping sharp a wheel. Bit concerned that as new one is an auto using cruise leaves me with nothing to do apart from point in right direction. With kids asleep (hopefully!) in the back the option of loud music on long journeys doesn't really occur. Expect wife will take a large pin to keep me awake!

I realise that the paper clip test isn't an option for you, but might be worth printing off a copy of error codes, so that if she does go wrong, you might stand a better chance of understanding what the fault is when at at tech2 enabled garage, and get past any language barrier, then if nessasary you could get access to here via an internet cafe and post up any problems.

Taken my MV6 to Carcasonne :)

Take a spare crank sensor - its the one sensor that stops the car working.

Be aware, alledgely they time you between the toll booths, hence why plod sit in layby just beyond booths...

Thanks, that's the route we're looking at with a stopover aound 1/3 or 1/2 way through, as banking on 10hour drive give or take additional kiddie stops for toilets.

18 months back, when we did Calais to halfway between Lyon and the coast, that took about 12hrs, though there was a 1yr old in the party so lots of stops....

Not much between Dijon and Lyon to stop at though...
