Logging on to OOF (Aggggggghhh)
« on: 03 July 2009, 12:58:44 »

Ok.  packed to to move home, left all the important stuff out till last.  paperwork, Computer, remotes, medical bits, clothes.

Started moving on the 8th, hired a van, took on the help of mates.  created a plan of attack and made a start.  Anyways, my mates decided on a different plan of attack and took all the content of my spare bedroom and proceeded to bury it all in my new spare room, and then just kept filling it up.

Anyways, whilst I was waiting for the Adsl to be changed over on the 10th I stripped down my main computer for a clean up and de-clog (It was more than over due) Could'nt find my tin with screws and heat sink paste in it.  So I thought the next time I order or go shopping I would get some more. . . .So the computer got put to one side and is still waiting for HS Paste.

Then I dug out a P4 base unit that I aquired, no onboard Lan but had a NIC in it (and I believe I have had it networked before)  No matter what I have tried I cannot get the network to work, so gave in on that.

Then out comes an old faithfull.  A Soltek Qubic powered with a 2600+ AMD and only 256MB of ram.  Straight online no problems at all.  The the keyboard lead gave up, it has got damaged at the point where it goes into the back o the keyboard (My own fault as I pick ot up by the wire when I drop it )(Normally after a cat nap)  Had a nosey round and managed to find a cordless keyboard (bought for a friend who then didnt want it)

Then, the Qubic started to hang (Still on original XP Pro no SP's installed)  that finnally started to ask for the windows disk to repair it. . . . yup, you guessed it, I have no idea at all where my install disks ended up.

Next machine ended up being a 2.4 compaq Evo, only 256Mb and an MX440 64MB graphics card upgrade, but gets me on the OOF evey night.

Now the FirkiNG Wireless keyboard has gone Bits up...........Adddddhhhhh.  Checked connections, new batteries, but no joy.

has taken me 36 hours to find a wired keyboard (that has been on the top of a book shelf and I have walked past it every day.

What really annoys me is that I have far too much sorting to do to go shopping, I really dont want to order any new stuff at the moment as I will get carried away.  Worrse than that I know I have seen 3 brand new keyboards during the move and I reckon there are at least 3 lots of heat Sink paste on the go.

Oh to be organised again. :-/ :'(

Main thing is I am back on the OOF.

Cheers.  Nearly threw a strop and launched the cordless KB through the old TV, then thought better of it, as I would not be able to watch TV.   Then as I sorted it all this morning we had a flipping power cut. :(

Sort of similar myself.....tho i havent moved!
Been away for a few days, come back and my desktop pc decides, its not gonna boot  >:( (was working fine before i went away)

A quick play, and the bios is reporting primary disk, 0GB.
Now it carnt even see the disk.....so I guess that disk is fubared.

Ive just disected an unused Freeview box, and its got a 160GB IDE disk in it, so that will have to do for now
(The disk that appears to have died is a 160GB SATA)

Luckily all my data is on a 1TB SATA disk inside the PC,
which kinda brings it home, how important it is to backup data you want to keep.

I know that feeling.  When I format I allways create a windows/system partition for a fresh install and then move My Documents to a diiferent partition.  If there is a 2nd drive in the machine I move it to that or at least keep a copy.

Can never be too carefull with data. :-/

Had to scrap the 160GB IDE disk idea, theres only one IDE connecter on the MB and cd/dvd drive is  connected to that  :(

So, been out and bought a 80GB SATA drive (for £24.99  :y ), thats big enough for the system files.

Now I carnt find an XP disk that isnt scratched too much, to work  :(

You'll all be pleased to know that it is impossible for me to contribute to this thread as it is so technical in the electronic sense that you might as well be discussing it in a foreign language!! ::) ::) :D :D :D :D ;)
