the reason i was told for auto or semiautos gettin popular was, and i quote ' if you take the clutch pedal away from the driver you take away a lot of problems'. what he meant was no ridding the clutch, no over-reving to get the best fuel ecomony etc. also meant if the lorry was hard on fuel it wasnt the drivers fault as the gearbox decided what to do. it happened here wuth a big customer of vovlvos who had fm12s v2 with i shift, they were hard on fuel and the drivers couldent be blamed, still not sorted i think!

Ive always had a good mpg with the trucks that I drove, I belive it is on the driver and how he drives on what mpg he would or should get.
But I see the point your making :y

ive seen brand new clutchs on new trucks being burnt out cause the driver would always take off in third weather it was loaded or not cause that is what he always did or not knowing there was a half gear. brakes only lasting 25000km and scrapping discs and drums in the same time.

I can belive it. there is a lot of idiots on the road and they give us a bad name. ( us = truck drivers )
Its normaly commen sence that if your loaded ie 44t or less that you take a low gear. and when empty a bit higher ie third.
like I said it is the driver that controlls the mpg and wear and tear on the truck.

i know brivers who get 200000km out of brake linings on discs, there trucks have had no expense on them in 3 yrs, only servicing costs and windscreens and mirror backs! it only takes one to have everybody tarnished with the same brush [smiley=lipsrsealed.gif].
its hard trying to tell a driver that he has to move with the times and change his driving style, new engines dont need to be reved as hard and the limiter is there for a reason!

like the saying goes " you cant teach an old dog new tricks"
But some younger drivers are the same.

its the youger drivers are the problem. all the old hands had some basic knowledge of there trucks, they could try to get it home or now where an air leak is and what it comes from. now they dont even check oil or anything. many a time ive went to a breakdown to replace a fuse, didnt know what to check.

As some of you will know the earlier Volvos require you to set off in a low gear loaded or not. When i'm loaded i set off in 2nd low split, a driver should be able to feel whether a wagon's happy or bogging down.
Regarding the 2 530XFs in question the gaffer told me today he's not buying them. :( & no more Volvos so my next truck will be another Scania >:( which he loves. I said i won't drive another 4 series & will only drive an R series which at least have a better cab layout.
Was told i'd better nurse my Volly on for a bit longer then!!!! ::)

You're right mate & i love my globy it's a cracking truck, i can stand up & walk about in there & i'm not a little bloke!!! Trouble is he loves Scanny's & i don't. The R series are better but the others are a ridiculous layout, no storage & you CANNOT hurry the box between high & low range without hitting a neutral when you most need it.
      I HATE SCANIAS!!!!!!! >:(

thats slander over here! the volvo has a nice layout but the scania is still bad although they have lost the ladder  now. had one in bits about 6 mths ago putting lights on the roof, a classic with all the toys. who ever uses the coffee machine?

Sorry mate i just think they're tinny rattly old trucks & don't see the appeal.
Never driven an R series ...yet, i know i will. Do they have the same slow gearbox issues as the earlier ones or have Scania finally caught up with everyone else? ::)

dont worry mate i dont like them either, they are a c**t to work on i think. its the same box i think cause the one i was in was an auto thing. the reason they like them over here is the v8 and the horse power, theres nothing pulls like them and they love there sidepipes.
