Garden Gate Detector
« on: 31 July 2009, 09:46:31 »

Only the Window Cleaner and Dusty Bin man (he gets my bin for me if I forget to put it out.   :y ) ever come through my garden gate.  But it seems I have had some one else come through on other occasions.  We dont have problems with kids and thier footballs etc.  There was a stray chicken from a local farm once but my neighber knocked and asked 1st before going round the back.

Whats the best sort of device to fit to indicate the gate has been opened. Or even left open.

Or is is it worth fitting a portable PIR with an internal (indoors) warning (bing-bong type)

Or maybe even an outside spot light with PIR and CCTV for motion detection.  (would also cover the garage door. Down side on this one is I could wall mount it, but wound need to turn it 90 degress to the left for where it would have to be fitted.

TIA.   :y

Providing the perimeter security is good a 12 volt electric lock operated by a simple push switch is quite capable in keeping the casual callers at bay.

The advantage about having controlled perimeter access is that anyone found within the curtilage of that perimeter shouldn't be there - in most cases - and can be dealt with accordingly.

Cameras are fine providing they are of good quality and you link them to a DVR system ensuring that you have made provision for infra red lighting - either in the camera or as a seperate source - to cover the hours of darkness.  Always the more expensive option.

If you just want to know it's open a reed switch and magnet of the type normally used on doors would be the best bet. A PIR would be prone to false alarms IMHO.

If you just hook the latch up to the mains the screams will let you know someone is trying to open the gate  :o :o ::)

BTW -- would like to emphasise that this is not a serious suggestion  ::)

As Kevin says, a magnet/reed switch (as per the coolant level sensor on the Omega but one that works  :)) connected to a buzzer or doorbell would be simplest.  You can get radio ones if you don't want the wiring  but they'd be more costly.

Pretty useless if there's no-one in the house to hear it though.  Also you would need to locate the detector where it is difficult for an intruder to insert their own magnet!

just a thought but could you not just fit a closer to your gate. that way it would never get left open.

It's not a bother to me it's left open to a big degree, i am just concerned at someone coming past the window if I have the lappy in use in the kitchen.

I think I will end up with a bing-bong type alarm then i get the notice /warning of someone being present.

As you can tell i have been thinking about it more.  I could move the bins thats no probs, but the window guys are a team of young lads, they seem hard workers and look honest and do a good job, but you never know whats on thier mind when they look through your windows.
