Yippee!!
« on: 26 February 2007, 21:41:12 »

Before the birth of this forum, and my stumbling upon the 'dark side' the meega suffered the fatal crack of doom on the drivers side when the internal mechanism was separated from the strap  :(

Last week the passenger side started to make the same noise, but thanks to this place I knew what it was and how to possibly remedy the situation. Straight to local Vx and got the relevant parts, though had to order some of the plates, and set about reading the guide. Anyway, on Saturday while you were all doing real jobs I got busy with the check strap - such an awkward, fiddly job. The internal door skin had already started to come apart but I managed to straighten it out and get the plates fitted etc. Before putting the door panel back on I decided to nip up the torx bolts but one sheared off! Had to take it all out again, remove the broken bolt and start again  :-[

Got it done in the end and then on Sunday decided to try and create a fix on the driver side.  Used the same method except that there was very little of the original retaining plate left so the two reinforcement plates have nothing in the middle of them, but plenty round the edges to sandwich between them, if you know what I mean. On the first attempt I put the internal mechanism in upside down and the door wouldn't close at all. I though that was it, but when I inverted it all went well.

I know its not perfect, but now I have two working check straps, and a little bit of peace of mind. I was well pleased and had to partake in a few stellas to celebrate  [smiley=beer.gif]

By the way all parts cost £6.84. he said that was trade price and to be honest there was a few pence knocked off here and there. I also got the extra torx bolts free so I can't complain.

Catch it early enough, and you often get away with just the bush.

MaxV6's drivers door had that crack of doom, but 30s and 11p later, and the door was silent once again...

Absolutely !!
The hardest part was probably cutting down the external plates with a stupid hacksaw and blue air! Why don't the plates come already shaped for the job?
