B.T Broadband II

Paranoia or shenanigans?:

I usually enjoy a steady 1.2 (ish)Mb/sec. ADSL service with B.T.....their line checker always 'promised' 2Mb/sec.; but I`m a long way from the exchange and what I get is reliable and seldom changes with contention or traffic shaping issues, so I`m not too worried.

But, recently I have been watching the area`s specs. for line speed with the B.T checker and nearly everybody`s speed 'predictions' have dropped dramatically......in fact; few lines I checked hereabouts, now have speed said to be more than 512 Kb/sec.......and that includes some friends whom (actually) presently enjoy an 8Mb/sec. connection!?!?!

I wonder is B.T trying to circumvent any future regulatory action regarding promised 'up to' speeds by de-rating the line checker`s usual meerkating optimism?

Mine is 2.5 and is rated by the checker at 1

As to regularity action - what does the words up to actually mean?

We know.

And the public should know

It is all distance from exchange related, and if you read on it makes sense.

I see no issues with that

The line checker only promises "up to" speeds, no ISP will give a guarantee of what you will get.

I was told I could expect "up to" 14Mbit when I applied for ADSL, although it's been rock steady at 17Mbit for more than a year (and I continuously pull that bandwidth rather than just being "sync'd" at that speed).

I don't see what BT would have to gain by lowering the "prediction" value, except maybe reduce the number of tech support calls from people who don't understand quite how broadband works.

I suspect its to reduce complaints from people who don't get estimated speeds ::)
