 . . . I'm asking about other cars again.  Fords, clit, and CLK didn't go over well.  She likes the CLK and Avensis, but I also found that an IS200 can be had for the same money.  So CLK or IS200 as desireable choice, and Avensis as practical choice?  Thoughts?  Remember she wants an automatic car that's about the size of a Focus 5-door.  I want something that is safe, reasonably reliable, and has some headroom.  Then we see nice looking cars . . . .  ;)

The Toyota Altezza might be quite cheap but is it a bit big?

It should be reliable and is correct wheel drive, also is slow enough not to embarras any V6 Omega. (One went flat out while I was overtaking)

I would put that at top of list, Mercedes went through a poor build period, and the Avensis is bland and forgettable, you may forget you bought it!

I would say the Altezza would be as practical as any other car its size, biggest problem for it is it is in the same market segment as the BMW 3 series.

You can guess I don't like ponced up brands - if Altezza is good enough for country of origin and Toyota I think is more respected than their poncy brand. I like names for cars rather than model numbers

Altezzas are way too much, looks like an IS200 for 3K more?  Should have reiterated that we are only looking to spend about 4K.  Thanks though, I guess that is a vote for the IS200.

A mate of mine bought an IS200 recently and it seems OK. Pretty solid and looks like it would be easier than the Omega to work on. Correct number of cylinders and correct driven wheels.. ;)

Not sure that the running costs are like. He did mention it was a bit thirsty but one man's thirsty is another man's frugal.

Edited to say another mate of mine had an Avensis hire car and hated it. Said it was horrible to drive at speed due to instability and they are so dull to look at. I don't normally worry about looks and image and the like but i'd make an exception for the Avensis I think. Everything about it screams "repmobile".

Well, combined MPG seems to be about 28 for the auto. IS200. That's about on a par with a 2.2 Omega just looking at the govt. figures. 2.6 Omega isn't far behind.

I guess it depends on the anticipated mileage and the type of driving. The 2.0 Lexus engine is nice though. Feels and sounds like a much bigger engine and it's resonably quick I'd say.

That's not quite as good as we were hoping for.  The CLK is probably the same.  Gives us plenty to think about.   [smiley=dankk2.gif]

Nowhere near V6 for performance, flat put trying to stop the Omega behind it - no chance ;D ;D

You can't go wrong with the Lexus, it has topped the reliability survey for the last six years, very little goes wrong with them, drove one recently with 96,000 on the clock and it felt like a new car, everything still tight and very, very comfortable.

A woman in work has just got rid of an IS200 - she said it drove like an old man's car - and if that's not the nearest recommendation to a mini Omega I don't know what is  :y

Avensis have issues with lack of lumbar support and back ache. :(

OK I would recommend the IS200 because

RWD
Toyota reliability
Good residuals
Anonomous
Won't make you jealous
Tunable if you look at Japanese parts
