Did you know that from 15th October, it has been possible to make 999 or 112 calls from your mobile even if you are out of your own network's range?

I didn't.

Following proposals set out earlier this year, mobile phone users will from today be able to call the emergency service numbers (999 and 112) from another network if their own network is unavailable and an alternative provider has coverage. The phone will automatically switch over to whichever network operator has the best signal in that area. This will provide added reassurance to consumers should they need to call 999 or 112 and will be of particular benefit to those in rural areas across the UK.

Note 2 in the release (scroll down) also says "Consumers should also ensure that the mobile handset from which they wish to make an emergency call contains a SIM card"

Yup it pretty much has. My mum lives in a very rural area. I remember some years back that i couldn't get an Orange signal, but i could phone 112 if i needed

Yup, you don't need a sim, or credit, I used one that had been blocked once, no problem.

I had to make a 999 the other day in the heart of Epping Forest (London / Essex borders) where there's no Vodafone signal (some poor Girl's Polo had a argument with a Deer).

Anyway got through within seconds, only problem was, spent about 10 mins on the phone with the Police trying to explain where we were!, Turned out I'd been patched through to Cambridge Police Control Centre which is about 2 County's away?
