It was the snow shields then...

At a guess snow was compacted into them, then melted in the nice warm tunnel, pouring water inside the engine?

Surprised this has not come up before, since those trains run to the Alps  :-/

I can't help think there is more to this than they say, as they have been running 15yrs.

Probably find that inadeqaute maintence has allowed more snow to get passed shield etc

could be, Eurostars were cancelled but Le Shuttle was still running (different engine design) but they have stopped now as well  :-/
