Yup .. the case expands under the build up of pressure...  the "explosion" occurs when the case can no longer contain the pressure and disintegrates. It's one of the reasons a grenade case is so strong, to allow the chemicals to burn and build the pressure, if the case ruptures too soon the energy has not had time to build

The same process occurs when you take a beer bottle, fill it with water, then hit the top of the bottle with your outstretched palm.
