PC Recovery Disks.
« on: 09 February 2010, 23:49:41 »

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1265581862/all

On going problems from my neighbers PC, I need to flatten it and reinstall or find  a way of getting recovery disks for it.

Went into the hard drive management and found a recovery partition, will this be for a system restore setup as built into windows or will this be the original recovery setup disks that appertently are created by the new owner when they 1st use the computer.

If the partition holds the sony setup disks they how can I create a set.

System restore and/or recovery disks are something I have never plated about with.

My other option is if I can gain access to the hard drive easily is to swap it and install XP Pro whilst I test it and then put ther hard drive back when done.

TIA.   :y

Have a look at the below URL for directions for using the recovery partition:-

How large is the hidden partition? If it's gigabytes then perhaps it contains setup disks or even a drive image you can simply restore. If it's megabytes it's probably just some diagnostic software.

First step is to get into the BIOS setup and see if there's anything to enable booting from recovery partition. Might need to set something in the CMOS or use a key combination to trigger it at boot time.

Secondly, is there any software on the main partition to trigger a system restore?

Failing that, get in with an MBR editor and see what type the partition is set to. Quite often it's a FAT32 filesystem but has been set to a reserved partition type to hide it. You will also probably need to swap the bootable flag to this partition to get it to boot.

Thanks for the help.  Folloed the the link from BigAl and it was windows 7 but just been and booted it up and it seems F10 is doing the same job and has booted into a recovery screen.  I then switched it off and will wait fot her to come round (again  ::) :P ) tonight, then the option is her to compltely restore  and /or make a set of of back up disks if given the option.  Then if the restore fails it was'nt my decision.

Seems the partition is approx 8GB from what I can remember.  All her files are now backed up, plus I took a copy of all the program files and and copy of all the start menu links just incase any proof of added programs is required.  Her sisters computer has suffered again and allways seems to be when she goes on her email account  But having never seen any of this in progress I cant add or comment to anything other than I am being told.

So will see what happens tonight.

lol.  well she poped in Saturday lunchtime, left an hour and half later.  Poped back at 4.30 for 10 mins.  Came round again at 7.20 and left just before midnight.  Came round again sunday evening, then again on monday night, then came arround at 8pm last night an left at 11pm.

What is it with female neighbers.  Not my last house but the one before (1992) Icaught my neighber climbing through the window, all I saw at the time was her butt stock up in the air, the guy the other side came out and said she forgets her keys a lot of the time, and said I would get used to her.  Never actually saw her face that day, he introduced us the day after, she popped round an hour later at 1pm and was nearly a permanent fixture apart from me being at work, six weeks later she moved herself in.  I then moved away for 2 years and kept in touch (basic though )  sorry it was 3 house ago, then I moved to my last place, a few months later she moved in oposite me.

My last neighber I made a point of not betting friendly with, and she just thought I was the biggest bakit ever.

Now I have a new neighber, why is it I allways end up next to the good looking single women.  ::)
