Secondhand tyre blows out because it has a defect that wasn't noticed, people get hurt/killed as a result, both the garage and the fitter get sued.

wasnt my car i should add,was my mates, but the tyres were virtually brand new,no defects,they still had the little bits of rubber on the tread. he aint happy,stuck with tyres he cant get fitted.

Neither the garage or the fitter can confirm that 100% though.
As far as getting them fitted goes, go for the little backstreet one man tyre business rather than using the corporate whores.
That way, it's odds on you'll have someone who knows what he is doing rather than letting the tea boy touch it.

Just had a quick gander and can't find any legislation that states fitting secondhand rubber is illegal, probably just a case of they wouldn't fit them because they wouldn't make enough from it.

The law on "part worns" is very detailed .. and most places used to ignore it ... perhaps they have had a "gypsy warning" and have decided it is too difficult to comply ??

I understand that some may think "supplying" means "selling" and not "fitting" .. but I don't know if the law differs ..

The only thing I can pull from that is its ok as long as the meet the eurpeon specs and display the correct markings. Show no signs of damage or excess wear....and the killer, should be inflated to max operating pressure of the TYRE to check for damage again.....kin ell....

I had a refusal to balance a tyre because it had been damaged by a pothole. The damage did not show but the fitter could detect it. I was very grateful that he spotted it, tyres can be easily damaged although they appear OK
I don't think it sensible to buy used tyres & perhaps they should not be allowed to be sold

We've had this discussion before and, as I said then, if you buy a second-hand car, you buy second-hand tyres. In fact, that's probably worse, as you're unlikely to check them as thoroughly as ones that are off the vehicle.

I agree but the probability that used tyres have come off a car that has been involved in a major accident is greater

It's moot point. If you want to be 100% sure, then you have to buy new, but it's not as if we here about accidents due to defective second hand tyres every day.

I, personally, would use second hand tyres with, say, 6mm of tread if they were a very good make. I definately would not bother with used budget tyres.
