Ronnie project 2007/2 another update
« on: 30 April 2007, 18:46:45 »

After another successful pass for a driving test today, I celebrated by doing more project.

OK, managed to finally get the air injection back on the manifold (after forgetting until the heatshields were back on!) then the sodding water pipe. Heater bypass valve reconnected, but something looks wrong here. Possibly due to teh extra t-piece for the coolant to LPG system.

Anyway, gpot bored with that so decided to start taking cambelt off and then take out teh cams to access the hydraulic lifters which need an overhaul. Got bank one done and will do bank 2 tomorrow or whenever I have another spare 1/2 hour or so.

All lifers coming out at the same time and will get the oil and crap out before re-priming them and back in they go. SHould sound like a bag of spanners when it starts for 5 minutes according to Mark, so as long as it queitens down after that I am happy.

More pics:

Camcover removed exposing bank 1 cams.

Cambelt and pulleys removed having set crank to 60 degrees BTDC. Sprokets also removed.

Cam,belt tensioner and block removed

Cam journals removed and cam ready to remove

Cam 1 removed with cam oil seal exposing the dreaded hydraulic lifters.

Note how clean the cams and area are. Wrong oil in there, but that will all be gone soon.

If I had to buy a car It would be from someone like you ronnie /you really know your stuff and dont cut any corners.

You deserve every penny from the sale of this as you are doing a great job not like some back street dodgie garage's do

The internals of that engine do look lovely and clean. What's the mileage?

I wonder if that's a consequence of it running on LPG?

Thanks guys, especially Craig! very nice of you mate.

The mileage is 113k. It is in great condition really, but has had a few cowboys working on itso, it gets the fully monty.

I am renewing the cambelt, water pump, plug leads, full service, full MoT 6 months tax, refurbishing the alloys and removing the dent. Check strap is being fixed as well and then a full and very extensive valet to bring this car back to tip top. BUT, then it goes on sale as a 1999 Facelift 2.5v6 Elite with LPG, leather, Bose etc and fully history from new, just fully overhauled and ready to go. Price will be £3750 ovno. I'm not doing all this work for peanuts.

The pipe is the EGR feed from the manifold, is it not?

I've heard LPG runs cleaner than petrol so maybe it's done the lion's share of that mileage on gas. If it's been on petrol if certainly hasn't had the VX recommended service intervals because the dirty oil would have stained the ali head by now I reckon. That head looks like it's just come out of an acid bath!

Yes, TD. that is the EGR valve union to the manifold. Only on proper sized engines though! ;D

Yep, with propane being a gas at pretty much all ambient temps you're likely to encounter it doesn't condense back to liquid on metal surfaces like petrol vapour does, so you don't get the bore-wash and oil contamination that you get with petrol, especially from cold.

In many ways propane is a much better fuel than petrol, it has a higher octane rating so can run with higher compression ratio, burns more cleanly, produces more water and less carbon dioxide, and done properly with liquid phase injection you also get a charge cooling effect as the fuel evaoprates after injection. The main downside is lower energy density so you get shorter range than petrol, but with a proper high-compression propane engine the efficiency reduces this to a marginal amount. It's just unfortunate that it never really took off so there are very few proper propane engines available, just converted petrol ones which work OK but give very few of the benefits.

I agree. It's potentially a very good fuel for tuned engines. I think some guys on the Megasquirt list were talking about liquid phase injection. Not been following it recently though. Shame there's not enough commitment to it for anyone to build an LPG-Only engine. With every man and his dog popping up with the fuel that's the answer to the world's problems the only thing it guarantees is the continued use of petrol!

Nice work Ronnie.  I fully endorse what Craig says.

I always like to read your updates - the amount of progress that you make in such a short space of time is amazing.  I used to think that I was quite a good amateur mechanic.  Looking at your progress rates and reading other people's posts, like JamesV6, I am re-evaluating this and have come to the conclusion that I am not that good!!!

Best of luck with your project and I hope that a: you do not come up against too much grief and b: you get what you deserve when you come to sell.
