I also have a Landy Disco 1 commercial which I have sourced for my winter hack. It needed some minor welding for its MOT and it passed a few weeks ago. I didn't want to spend any real dosh on it until i knew it was sound (or as sound as an R plate 300TDi is these days...) and as such, other maintenance jobs were left to fester. Yesterday, that changed....
Air, oil and fuel filters changed as was the 6.5 litres of treacle that passed for oil. Steering damper changed. Rear propshaft rubber changed. Immobiliser immobilised (plug in chip doofer was broken) and a general tidy up and clean.
BIG difference. No more terminal shakes and shoogles when travelling about 50 and hitting a pothole. Starts cleaner. More poke ( again, as much as a 300 TDi is prepared to give....) then I discovered a potential problem.
The viscous fan had fallen off.
It was sitting nestled behind the radiator, gently kissing the crank pully and serpentine belt. Another shoogle on a pothole and goodness knows the mayhem that a chunk into the belt may have caused. Timing hidden on these (I think) but would still have been noisy.
Going by the chewing gum welds evident, someone else has already been in here to (nearly) fix it but, thankfully, these can run without the fan easily as long as an eye is kept on the coolant and its temp.
And seems like this was the release of the few extra horses. Bonus....
