Saving £7m-8m...Cost £100m?
« on: 11 September 2010, 00:16:50 »

Once again, with no apologies, a link to the "Counting Cats" blog. Did you know that we'll all be carrying thicker 5p and 10p steel coins from next January?

Seems like a non-event. Unless, that is, you believe the claims that it may cost £100m to change vending machines (and parking machines?) across the UK.

I don't know enough to comment, but interesting it most certainly is.

I understand that faking such coins will become easy...

And, more importantly, when Local Authorities are facing up to 40% cuts this will be an unnecessary additional expense taking even more money away from essential services..... >:(

I want to say a lot more but best not at the moment, had a bad day, and cuts will only make it worse... >:( >:( >:( :-X :-X :-X

To be honest I worry about the world Miss Vamps is going to be living in........ :-X :-X :-X

They'll put a notice/sign on the machine that says "This machine does not except 5p & 10p"
So the twenties, fifties & pound coins will only be exceptable. So more than likely where say parking cost 30p it'll go up to forty.
Probably the same with vending machines :-/ A ten pence cuppa will cost you 20p.

10p for a coffee at work & up in the Peak District there's quite a few car parks with 30p parking (though it may have gone up since the last time i was there).

Infact when i was in Cornwall a few weeks back on the Wave Hub project & IIRC the parking next to the beach at Hayle in Cornwall wasn't very much at all.
It didn't cost us anything to park, because we were contractors :)

I can believe it would cost a lot more than £100m. However the actual cost would be hidden as companies would just absoeb it.  If one of the eurozone countries left the euro as was likely earlier this year the sheer cost of changing all the machines that take money would have been staggering.

Just out of curiousity i've looked at parking charges for Amber Valley. In my area there are a few small towns & parking charges are as  follows:- In Heanor parking for half an hour is 30p & 40p for an hour.
In Ripley, Alfreton & Belper it's 40p for half an hour & 50p for an hour.
I didn't know this, because i never park in the car parks ;D

I'd be interested to know how much it costs down in Kent?

40p per half hour is usually now the very cheapest.  Often it is 80p - 90p per hour, or now at certain parking sites £1 per hour.  At the main hospital it has just been put up to £2 for a minimum / maximum of two hours, and £3 for 3-5 hours.

As for drink out of vending machines, well at uni where it is meant to be subsidised it is 60p per cup.  Elsewhere I have seen 80p per cup.
