Shocking attitude to drink driving!
« on: 03 May 2007, 10:57:12 »

This is true and the person involved is now planted.

The village I work in has two pubs and is on a main road.

A regular in one pub used to drink every evening, then drive around 1/3rd mile home. He was so drunk he followed the centre lines of the road, then turned right as the lines changed type - hopefully getting into his drive.

Occasionally the car would be abandoned at the drive entrance as he couldn't get it in.

I was shocked when this was discussed, and most shocking at all.

me "Why didn't you report him to the Police?"
other "What! He hasn't hurt anyone and what is wrong with doing this" ect

I was moaned at for suggesting the Police.

I am guilty of not reporting it (partly didn't want comeback) but a few weeks later the problem was solved drunk themselves to death basically!

Martin, to drive in that sort of condition is totally unacceptable and you would have been totally right to have reported him. A few years ago I was driving home in the early evening with the missus and we were following a Rover Metro that was swerving all over the road, clipping kerbs and roundabouts and almost crashing into oncoming cars. It was so dangerous that I couldn't even attempt to overtake him safely. I had no hesitation in calling the police on my mobile and reporting him as a suspected drunk driver as he was in imminent danger of killing or maiming someone. The police located his address from the registration No. I gave them and he was duly nicked when he arrived home (God knows how he managed to get all the way home!! :o) and was found to be about 3 times over the legal limit!!

I had no name nor reg number, just that some work collegues live in the village.

The last time I reported anyone, I reported not for any action but as a bottom covering excercise as I passed a road rager by correct laning and they got angry due to being passed.

I thought they may report me so got in first ;D

(they were up my bum so I slowed right down then booted off into the distance.) Can't remember details just wanted it recorded in case there was comeback. The police were fine and totally understood my action and siad they would take no action unless there were any other complaints.

Seems to me he got what he deserved

I wonder if the people you were discussing this with would have the same opinion if the person in question was still alive and if he was to park his car on one of there children injuring or killing them or mistakedly park his car in the front living room.

Just my tuppence worth

I was blunt enough to say that! (deserved)

Didn't think of the second!

I'd have reported him without question  >:(

A bloke I worked with used to run the bar of the local rugby club of an evening, sink a few and drive a mile or so home.  His brother was local plod so he thought he was invincible.

By some strange co-incidence (no, not me) a police car just happend to be waiting nearby at 1am.  He needed his job for work and had to employ a driver for 12m after a big fine and a ban. Tough luck.

Unfortunately, this appears to be fairly common in small villages. I grew up in a small village and it was rife. I would report anybody in an instant.
Why don't these villagers take turns and have a duty driver?
I don't even have 1 drink if I know I am driving. Whats the point?
