Having finally located my V5C document, I had a look on the VOSA (or DVLA?) website.  It appears that my car will require a Vehicle Identity Check.

It seems that this needs to happen after the repairs have been carried out.  It also appears that I need the VIC before I can get the car taxed.  Unfortunately, the tax runs out at the end of this month, and I'm not sure that there's enough time to get the repair done by then.  I don't know how long I have to wait to get a VIC appointment, but given that it's a government department, there's almost certain to be a waiting list.

So it looks like I'm going to be without a car for a while unless I can convince the DVLA that it's unreasonable not to let me tax the car just because the insurance company took 6 weeks to decide they weren't going to repair it. 

Does anyone think I've got a chance of getting it taxed?

Cat D does NOT require a VIC check,

Note .. you don't need a VIC check to get an MOT .. in fact .. if it is being driven to a VIC centre it MUST have an MOT first, insurance, but not tax

Taking the car for a VIC

When you take your car for a VIC the following must apply:

    * repairs must be conducted and the car must be roadworthy and capable of being driven under its own power
    * if it's over three years old, the car must be covered by a valid MOT if it's being driven to the VIC
    * the person driving the car must be insured
    * the car must display front and rear number plates if it's being driven to the VIC - for assistance in obtaining number plates, contact VOSA on 0300 123 9000

A car can be driven directly to and from a pre-arranged VIC without road tax.

wont hurt to try to tax online. there is a check made on the motor insurance database, then the mot database. if these come back ok you might get lucky.

Sorry - it's Cat C.  The insurance is fine, and it should have an MOT by Friday, so that won't be a problem. I'd already discovered that I'm allowed to drive it to the VIC test centre. 

But if I don't get the tax, I won't be able to drive it anywhere else.

Yeah - I'm going to give that a try, but I don't think I'll get away with it, because the DVLA already has it marked as needing a VIC. 

On the other hand, given the accuracy of Government IT systems, I could be lucky...

You are, of course, absolutely right.  But I rang the VOSA number this morning and listened to 4 minutes of automated waffle which culminated in directions to their equally confusing website. 

Quite honestly, after 2 years out of work, my mental health is so fragile that I avoid telephoning any institutional services, be they Government Departments, banks or insurance companies, except as a last resort.  Unfortunately, I don't think I can avoid this one, but it was worth a try.

Just for the record, I took STMO123's advice and phoned the DVLA.  Again, just for the record, he gave me the wrong phone number. 

It has now changed, but they switch you through anyway.  The new number is 0300 790 6802.

I got connected more or less straight away.  There were 6 levels of menu, I think (I lost count - my brain was beginning to overheat) and then I got put into a queue.  To my astonishment, I was only in the queue for a few seconds before being connected to a very helpful Welsh lady who patiently listened to my question and then went away to check the answer. 

It appears that I won't be able to renew the tax online, but there won't be any problem if I go to the Post Office, who just want to see the renewal notice, the insurance certificate and the MOT.  I can then get the VIC check done when the car has been repaired.  I may be sent a reminder.

So now all I need is for the car to get through the MOT tomorrow.
